So, I decided to not reuse the RAM from a previous build and just buy a new 16GB 1866Mhz set of sticks instead of using the older 1600Mhz 12GB green sticks from my older pre-built computer. Changed out the ASUS Z97-AR to the Sabertooth (the AR was lower in price at the time, but taxes and shipping after it suddenly wasn't on sale anymore made it more expensive than the damn Sabertooth). Took out the ZOTAC AMP Edition 980 for the EVGA FTW 970 due to me not really wanting to spend the extra money on the 980 in the first place and wanting to SLI the 970's down the road. Case was originally the Titanium Define R4, but due to color schemes, I just decided to go with the Blackout Edition as it would go with the Sabertooth a bit more. 

 

This is my gaming workstation, I'd like to know your thoughts/opinions. If you have any questions about it then I'd be happy to answer them. 

 

NOTE: THE PARTS HAVE ALREADY BEEN BOUGHT. SO NO TURNING BACK NOW UNTIL I RECEIVE THEM. 

 

OPTIONAL READ: This isn't my first rig I've ever built, I've actually built 2 before this one. It's just my first ever rig I've built for myself. So I've got some experience under my belt. :P

I got a question. Why did you buy a Z97 board when you have a Xeon, you could a save some bucks on buying a H97 instead.

Features, SLI, looks, reliability, ASUS (lol), going to try boosting the base clock (which is technically how you overclock a Xeon), probably going to grab a "5770k" when it's released and give the Xeon to a friend or my mom lol.

Asus H97, H87, B85, H81 boards are overclockable.

Looks like a legit build to me :)

EDIT: I do like how you went with a Xeon rather than an i5. It's something you don't see every day so I have some appreciation for that.

The Xeon outperforms the i5 even when overclocked to roughly 4.5Ghz in pretty much everything besides gaming by at most 5% - 10% (which isn't even a big deal when you've got a good GPU) and some random benchmarks that don't really apply to me and my uses.

Asus H97, H87, B85, H81 boards are overclockable.

No SLI on any of those. Also, again, what if I want to OC the hell out of the Broadwell i7? Those boards will not handle that. I simply like the looks of the board as well and am a fan of ASUS's TUF and ROG line up.

That's kinda like how I went with a 580. Compared to a 680, the compute preformance is faster than the 680, as shown by Anantech in their 680 writeup. But in gaming, the 680 takes the cake.

I was gonna ask about that lol. I'm assuming that build is 1 or 2 years old now though right? You planning on upgrading that soon or are you waiting for the 1000 series? (God I hope they change the naming scheme soon...that sounds weird. LOL)

The MoBo, CPU, RAM, 2/3 mass storage drives, one of the optical drives, and PSU were all bought new about a year and a half/two years ago, the 580 was bought off of Ebay, the case was bought used for $10 and is from 2003. My system has been in 5 cases of which only one that was new was the first one, a HAF 912, and there have been, in this order, five GPU setups:

 

- 660 Ti

- 760

- Dual AMD 7770's in CFX

- back to the 760

- 480

- 580

Well dayum. Lol Sounds like quite the adventure for you to getting to the #PCMasterRace

and support different instruction sets and EEC ram

They support DDR3 and ECC. They might be from a different "silicon slice" but the architecture is still based off of Haswell, and it has 4 cores with HT. Making very similar to an i7-4770/90 non-k CPU.

What do you mean Xeon's support DDR3 and ECC?

ECC is just an extra chip on the Dimm, it has nothing to do with the pins on the bottom.

ECC is just an extra chip on the Dimm, it has nothing to do with the pins on the bottom.

ECC...as in ECC memory/RAM. Where'd you get the impression that I was treating it like another series/type of RAM? I never said anything like that.
