Will PS3/PS4 work with a displayport monitor if I use an adapter?

I'm thinking about buying a monitor soon that will replace both my computer monitor and my TV. Does anyone know if I can play PS4 on a monitor that has only a displayport? There are displayport to HDMI adapters around but I don't know if they will work (especially with audio) and I'd really like to avoid any kind of input lag that the adapter might cause. Any info on this?

Usually an adapter will work just fine, other times it'll display a "no signal" thing because of some reason with the console thinking the adapter doesn't work as an output.

Some monitors only support a DP signal, and HDMI conversion would require an active adapter. Some monitors don't supply the right info to the console as it's not native HDMI, so the console might not detect the monitor at all.

yes it should, however i suggest having a hdmi cord out of the console, the convert/ adapt it at the monitor

As opposed to using the adapter on the console? I was going to do what you recommended anyway but what would be the difference if I did it the other way?

Not sure if I'm wording this right but here goes. If you connect the adapter to the console the console may not give a signal thinking there is an issue at the point of connection. Where as if you have it connected to the monitor the signal is being converted at the monitor side of things rather than the console side. Again I'm sure if the wording is correct here but I hope you understand what I mean.
