Samsung 850 PRO or Crucial MX100?

Recon97
Go to solution Solved by 79wjd,

Could you please give me final answer?

Unless you plan on writing terabytes of data on a daily basis then you don't need the additional reliability of an 850 pro, and an 840 evo or MX100 would be more than sufficient.

Which one to go for?

Money is not the issue.

Both of them have same storage capacity of 512GB.

850 Pro is more reliable but not worth the significant price hike AT ALL unless you need lots of reliability.

They're entirely different classes of drives, but more than likely you don't need the pro.

Get either the 840 evo or the MX100, whichever is cheaper.

The MX100 doesn't really hold a candle to the 850 Pro for anything other than pricing: http://ssd.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Samsung-850-Pro-256GB-vs-Crucial-MX100-256GB/2385vs2317

All modern day SSDs are VERY reliable. IIRC the 840 has gone through endurance tests of 80tb+ writes.

Linus had a whole review on the 850 pro; unless you planning to write and rewrite the SSD a lot and you need something that can stand the test of time, then the 850 pro is your pic.

I'll make it easy 850 pro or 840 evo what ever is cheaper. Done

Nvidia is to Dr Dre Beets as AMD is to KFC.

One makes you broke, the other you can get more of and have a midnight snack from the fridge when hungry again. Once you go Nvidia, you go broked, turn into an Elitist, or get the incorrect amount of VRAM.

I was only 9 years old. I loved Fifflaren so much, I had all the NiP merchandise and matches pirated. I prayed to Fifflaren every night before bed. Thanking him for the life I have been given. Fifflaren is love I say. Fifflaren is life. My dad hears and calls me a fuckhead. I knew he was just jelly of my passion for Fifflaren. I called him a Sw@yer. He hits me and sends me to go to sleep. I'm crying now, and my face hurts. I lay in bed and it's really cold. A warmth is moving towards me. I feel someone touching me. I feel someone touching me. It's Fifflaren. I am so happy. He whispers in my ear; "this is my pyjama". He grabs me with his powerful Swedish hands and puts me on my hands and knees. I'm ready. I spread my ass cheeks for Fifflaren. He penetrates my butt-hole. It hurts so much but I do it for Fifflaren. I can feel my butt tearing as my eyes start to water. I push against his force. I want to please Fifflaren. He roars a viking roar as he fills my butt with his love. My dad walks in. Fifflaren looks straight into his eyes and says; "He is a ninja now". Fifflaren is love, Fifflaren is life

honestly though Intel does a lot more validation, so I'd trust them. 730 series SSDs from Intel will not fail you.

Intel is good for reliability (for any Intel product)

It's not as simple as that - there's budget, use case, *how* reliable you want it to be.

SSDs nowadays are all reliable. If you want validation, get an Intel 730, If you want to write to it over and over, like in a server, get an 850 pro.

If you want good value and all-roundedness, get MX100 (840 evos have the performance degradation issue)

The 850 is the fastest ssd on the market in sata 3 the mx100 is far from that

Please follow your topics guys, it's very important! CoC F.A.Q  Please use the corresponding PC part picker link for your country USA, UK, Canada, AustraliaSpain, Italy, New Zealand and Germany

For the 850PRO money you could go raid0/1 mx100. Do the math :)

Intel is gonna fail you just like anything else. Nowdays it all comes down to draw of luck. Backup is always recommended, no matter the brand or model.

Intels do fail, but they go through a lot more testing and validation, and have a lower failure rate than others, so i'd trust it more.

backing up your data is always good.

It's like the difference buying a $1 USB Thumbdrive from a random chinese brand and a $10 one from SanDisk. Both will fail eventually, just that the chinese one might fail a lot sooner.

no point beating a dead horse, though. OP already made his decision.

I still have not.First of all I want top notch performance for my top notch PC.Then comes the reliability, our old sweet friend of all times.I just want a SSD that can go through massive read and writes over a large period of time without sacrificing performance at every turns. Its warranty should be long enough, but hey thats what 850 PRO gives you! I dont trust intel in other things other than cpus :P

I guess - the problem is, with SSDs advancing so fast, and assuming your data load isn't that of a server, you won't *need* the performance of the 850 pro, and the difference between a 730, 850 and MX100 won't be noticeable unless you try to measure it. By the time 3-4 years is up, (the warranty length of an SSD), the drive would be dated, and won't perform as well as other drives on the market, and would have been way more expensive.

Better buy a MX100 now, then upgrade in 3 years to something with a few times the capacity and much better performance at half the price.

Also, I'm not sure if I want to trust Samsung, seeing as how their 840 Evo drives recently had a large problem.

here are some links on the Intel SSDs, they're a good watch.

Intel's products are known for their reliability - it's the reason why they make most stuff (motherboards, chipsets, CPUs, SSDs) mostly for the enterprise (maybe not CPUs so much); they might not perform the best, but they come darn close, and are legendarily reliable. As Linus put it, he has some Intel SSDs that have been running since 2008 without a hitch.

Considering, intel costs almost twice as much as crucial, it highly doubt its twice as reliable as two mx100 in raid0. Just a thought :)
