This game is either my most favourite or perhaps second favourite game of all time.

Can someone explain why these games are so renowned? 

Would someone still have a good time playing these for the first time?

I can explain, somewhat. This (and X-Wing) were the first time we as fans of the SW franchise could indulge in the most amazing power fantasy, vise a vie a space pilot ace. TIE Fighter more than X-Wing for gives us the means to fight for the Empire, something vastly underestimated by everyone until this was discovered. Add to that solid mechanics, gameplay and voice acting, couple with what were then excellent graphics, and you got a hit.

 

I can't say for sure if you would like this. If you had a joystick and a penchant for flying games, or space games, or Star Wars; I think you might find it very enjoyable. I still play it, two decades after it first came out, and I still play it from time to time.

Ah. I think I got my fill with the space battles in Battlefront 2.

hmm...don't know if it's an age thing...but i ( as a Tie Pilot ^^) think it's a different kind of 'rewarding feeling' ...

 Great i can now waste my adulthood the same way i wasted my childhood.

 

 

Same here, these are among my all-time favorite games :)
