Cat6 wired connection to motherboard

jakeib

I'm not really sure how to phrase this but will a high speed Cat6 Ethernet cable allow me to connect to the internet if it plug it into a MSI H87-G43 motherboard Ethernet slot ?

So basically I used to run a wired cable (not sure what Cat#) on my old computer but the wire broke and had been using the PCI network card for a while until I got my new computer(The one im using now). I ended not putting the pci network card in because it was old tech and have been using a usb dongle for now. Today I'm trying to install a CAT6 ethernet cable but im not sure if the motherboard (MSI H87-G43) supports it.

I realise that I am a complete noob when it comes to networking so please feel free to ask questions.

Jake

yes it will work. and the speed will be the lowest common denominator (probably your ISP providing you with <1Gb

cat 6 stands for category 6.  Its just a tech specification.  Under cat 5e can't do 1 Gb/s.  They are all ethernet cables and all use an rj45 connector.

I just doesn't seem to show up on my adapter settings. I have the understanding that I need to use the GigE port on my BT hub 3 and my motherboard should support it fine, right ? Are there any settings I may need to consider when a new motherboard uses a wire for the first time ?

Again, Sorry for the inconvenience, Jake

nope, nothing, its just plug and play ;) the only real difference between CAT# is how they shield the cables ;) so its inherently the same cable, just better shielded

If things dont work, just make sure your windows is up to date and any affiliated drivers.

Make sure to install your motherboard nic drivers. They can be found on the disc that came with your motherboard or online. If that doesn't work, try a device that already works with a wired connection. There is a slim chance it could be your cable.

Also Cat 5, 5e, and 6 should all work with no problem. Category 5 is usually 10/100 mbps, 5e can do Gigabit, and 6 can do 10 gigabit. However the cable will only run as fast as your intermediary devices (Routers/Switches) can handle. The categories also have increasingly good crosstalk protection.

The category version doesn't have to do with UTP vs STP. They do have less crosstalk as the category numbers go up though.

Ok i may have used the wrong word, I meant that yes. But to an everyman it doesn't matter really
