Is this still worth it?

Go to solution Solved by Fulgrim,
Folding = using your PC's hardware to "fold" Proteins. It helps to create cures for diseases and such, and if you don't mind the slight bump in your electric bill, and want to help a good cause when you're not using your PC, then go for it.

Bitcoin/Litecoin is similar in that it uses your PC's processing power, but to calculate hashes. The more it can do per second, the better. Each "block" that gets processed earns you bitcoins/litecoin or whatever currency you choose to mine. And these coins have a monetary value which is subject to change.

Right now, mining is not profitable, or at least not on a small scale.

As for folding, it's purely voluntary and gives you a bigger electric bill but the satisfaction knowing you are helping a good cause.

Hi! So, I heard a lot about Bitcoin and litecoin and I want to know more about this

First, is it worth it? Do I get that much money and does it take too much time?

Also, what is folding? I really want to know

dude what

No. You do it out of the kindness of your heart to help research for cures to serious diseases and disabilities.

Depends how long you fold for, the efficiency of your hardware, and the price of electricity where you live.

The change in your electric bill would be based off of how much you choose to fold and how much you use your PC now. The change definitely should not be huge.

Not much tbh. It's dependant on how many watts your PC can consume, and how much your energy supplier charges per kw/h. (kilowatt hour). Here's a post i made a while back in another thread, to help a guy work out how much it'd cost to run his rig as a server whilst he was away on holiday. Take note however, it is the potential maximum energy consumption used, it won't be anywhere near that amount, but generally speaking you'll spend about ~£5 more than what you currently pay per month.

Depending on how many watts your rig uses, it'll vary. Since it won't be running at 100% capacity, it will be drawing less, the best you can do is work out a rough estimate of the maximum possible consumption.

Use this to work out the wattage of your rig. http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp

That is how many watts per hour it can be drawing. As an example, say if my rig was pulling 400 watts.

400 watts = 0.4kw/h   <--- how much i'll be using an hour, at most
1kw/h = 1000 watts
0.4kw/h x 24 = 9.6kw/h  <--- so for 24 hours use i can use up to that amount of electric
9.6 x 7 = 67.2 kw/h  <-- 1 week's potential use of electric
67.2kw/h x 4 = 268.6kw/h

It's ~17pence per kw/h for me, so -

9.6kw/h x 17 =  £1.63  <--- 24 hours
67.2kw/h x 17 = £11.41 <--- 1 week
268.8kw/h x 17 = £45.69 <-- 1 month

It will not be that high, since it won't be running balls out, it'll most likely be burning about £15 - £20 a month on electric, considering it won't be running at it's maximum potential, and it won't be running that hard often because the server won't be constantly full.

As for my real wattage usage, i haven't got the gear to calculate it perfectly, but it pulls about ~60watts when i'm not doing much, i.e watching a movie or browsing the web.
