Upgrading to the new generation

arbiater

Hello there, I recently built my own machine roughly around 2 months ago with the following specs:

Asus ROG z97 ranger

intel core i7 4790k

corsair h100i

gigabyte windforce 780ti

wd black 1 tb

samsung 840 ssd

cooler master v1000 psu

Asus PB287Q

Recently there has been the release of the much hyped about 980 and 970 and upon reviewing the newer model compared against my 780ti, it provides many considerable benefits with not much of a price rise. Now my original plan was to get two 780ti in sli to run my 4k tn panel which would be sufficient to run most next gen games at high or ultra at native resolution. But i did not get the second 780ti due to budget constraints, thus i viewied the second 780ti as an upgrade for the future. But with the release of the 980 by feelings are mixed.

The bottom line, should i get a secondary 780ti or get a single 980?

2 780Ti's will be more powerful, however more VRAM is always nice. Just stick with what you have. There will always be something better coming out, especially in computers.

Don't bother with any upgrading until Pascal or perhaps even Volta, which will both blow your cards out of the water.

If you plan on running 4k, then the second 780 titanium is going to help more than getting a single 980. While the 980 does have 4gb of vram, it just doesn't have the power on its own to push 4k gaming.

Ohhh, so thats what the TI stands for  ;)

The 780ti is a beast. considering the price cuts its been taking, wait till black Friday, and check the deals there. The prices generally won't increase from now on.

Yeap, titanium goes back awhile with nvidia. Kinda sad that it now means nothing but a sells gimmick.

Stick with your GTX 780 in my opinion because they are still Beefy cards . 980 and 970 are just the beginning , GTX 780 Ti is the last and most improve out of  all the 700 series . Wait a few more yeard so that we can see what Maxwell can do , If its more then 780 Ti SLI , go for it .

... Life is a game and the checkpoints are your birthday , you will face challenges where you may not get rewarded afterwords but those are the challenges that help you improve yourself . Always live for tomorrow because you may never know when your game will be over ... I'm totally not going insane in anyway , shape or form ... I just have broken English and an open mind ...

It's not a gimmick. It shows that that card is a fully unlocked version of the non ti card.

Isn't the TI supposed to be pronounced, "tye?"

That's what I thought. Still surprising a lot of people never caught onto it and told people who were pronouncing it correctly that they were wrong. :/

I mean it is somewhat understandable, the titanium line came from the geforce 2 era which was forever ago. I know they brought it back with the 500 series, yet at that point they gave up with what titanium actually meant. Meaning titanium cards weren't special editions anymore, and were more or less a more expensive version of the non-titanium version. And now we have an accidental history lesson on how all newer 'titanium' cards aren't really titanium.

And people will always call it T I because I do believe no one remembers the geforce2/3/4 days
