SSD vs WD Red VS WD velociraptor for server?

InfamousSynergy

Hey hey,

I am running a game server, I only need about 60gb of space but it currently running on an old Sata laptop WD drive... It NEEDS to go like NOW. I am drawn between an SSD, A WD Red and A velociraptor. The RED is designed for 24/7 server use but is pricey, The ssd is currently seeming the most logical option but I haven't really looked into velociraptor vs ssd. I know velociraptors are high RPM mechanical drives but for a server, I don't know how that would stack up...

Any advice/feedback appreciated, thanks :)

if you want a hdd i would get a hitachi ultrastar or deskstar for 7200rpm hdds and for ssd just get a sp920 128gb dpends on budget as the hdd is half the price  and the ssd will lag a lot less

the velociraptor was just the high speed drive for enthusiasts before ssds were cheap, becasue back then and ssd for boot drive was put into very expenisve builds, since it cost so much. Id recommend a WD black drive or an SSD, actually since you only need 60gb of storage the ssd would be very nice.

Best cheap SSD out there is Crucial MX100

that link is for 128gb model

If you only need 60GB the best way is SSD. Less power, no noise, super fast speeds.

Depends on the writes that you do with the server. Most do a ton of writes and will burn out a regular ssd real quick. That's why there are a whole nuther level called enterprise drives that are not usually available to the great unwashed. Expensive, too.

For a hardworking server I would look at the enterprise side of things, not the consumer side. Constellation drives by Seagate. WD has server drives as well. Server grade ssd's by Toshiba, SanDisk or Intel. Be prepared to pony up the cash. At least you only need one!

Sir William of Orange: Corsair 230T - Rebel Orange, 4690K, GA-97X SOC, 16gb Dom Plats 1866C9,  2 MX100 256gb, Seagate 2tb Desktop, EVGA Supernova 750-G2, Be Quiet! Dark Rock 3, DK 9008 keyboard, Pioneer BR drive. Yeah, on board graphics - deal with it!

Hey there, @InfamousSynergy!

As you can see a lot of pros and cons to all the possibilities.

WD Reds are specifically designed for RAID/NAS use and tested in 24/7 environments as well, as you mentioned. However, for gaming I wouldn't recommend them. From what I can see, your focus is on the speed. And since we are talking about a gaming HDD that will fit your budget, you should take a look at WD Black drives. Though it might not be a good idea to put them in a server: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=760

The SSD indeed seems like your best option, because you don't need big capacity - just high speed, but as @Dimwitted mentioned if you intend to write to the server constantly, the regular SSD will most probably fail.

WD Velociraptors have impressive speed with 10 000 RPM and Pre-emptive Wear Leveling (PWL) that ensures reliability for your gaming read/write operations. Another upside of those is that they come with a 5-year warranty. http://wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=20

However, if you truly intend for your server to be working 24/7 with a high workload on the storage, I would second the opinion to check out the Enterprise HDDs as well: http://wdc.com/en/products/internal/enterprise/

Hope this helped. :)

SuperSoph_WD

I hope I can help with any storage issues that you may have!  ;)

Thanks for the replies guys :) - If it helps, ALL the machine will ever do is Host a GMOD DarkRP server and possibly a tekkit server in the future (It also runs TS£ but lets face it, a toaster can do that), There isn't a HUGE ammount of writing going on. The machine also backs up around 20gb to my NAS every night. High read, medium write. The velociraptor is pretty much out of the question, The black I may consider as I own 3 (2 in the NAS, 1 in my desktop) and they are really nice drives. The WD Red drives are a bit pricey so I will pretty much forget about that so now its a question of WD black vs SSD :)

I need the storage to be reliable but I want to spend as little as possible so I don't want to go to over kill :) (Bearing in mind, I may end up getting 2 drives and putting them in raid incase a drive fails)

What? At least here, WD Blacks are much more expensive than Reds (of the same size). They are about the same as Red Pros. Sure you didn't mix up Reds with Red Pros or Re4?

Well, at least according to uk.pcpartpicker.com in the UK WD blacks cost 25£ more than reds for the 2 TB version, 35£ more for the the 3 TB version and 43£ more for the 4 TB version...

As far as 2TB drives go at my local computer store, the black is £40 more than the green however they do make a WD purple which is designed for surveillance/cctv machines but that's a 24/7 server type drive still and they seem pretty cheap?

SSD, for sure. You have to worry about HDDs dying much more than SSDs.

Adata and Sandisk have really inexpensive 64GB drives that are good.

True true, Plus I guess I don't need to worry about defrags :) - I have seen some cheap SSD's on amazon (About £35 for a 128GB) with decent looking speeds, Do you think there to cheap and nasty?

You're going to have to provide some links.

Either way, a ssd is going to be the best performing, quietest, and most reliable solution out of the 3. Reds are needlessly expensive for this application and Velociraptors are so loud that I wouldn't use one if it was free.

Ahh, okay, thanks for letting me know, As far as the ssd link goes: http://www.amazon.co.uk/KingFast-2710MCJ15-128-128GB-Internal-SSD/dp/B00MJNFJNY/ref=sr_1_14?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1414625331&sr=1-14&keywords=ssd

I don't mind buying a better ssd if needs be but if I can save the cash, might as well :)

The sequential write speeds look pretty horrible and i can't find anything on the random speeds.

Instead, I'd suggest:

Sure xD

- I might get a crucial mx100 as they are solid drives, there cheap and have insane speeds

Don't listen to those people, SSD is your best bet for having enough bandwidth to Stream the game data to way more people with way less latency. Most powerful HDD are about 150 Mb/s while SSDs are 550 Mb/s so yeah more bandwidth to divide between the players. SSD are more stable and solid, the faster response time will help the latency. As for gaming on SSD, a big no to MX100, EVO, etc. and get one of those SSD : Neutron GTX, Samsung 850 PRO, Intel 730.

And Sequential Speed isn't what games will use but Random Read which there's not a ton on SSDs or any hard drives.

Yea, it's a server, the SSD isn't for gaming plus the 850 is over double the price :/ - I could warrent the cost of an 850 in my main pc but not in a server :/
