Should I buy a Wii U?

Hi all,

 

So basically: I'm fed up with games on PC not working and Smash Bros looks balls to the walls amazing. Don't get me wrong, I'm a PC gamer as far as PC gaming goes (I own nearly 300 steam titles and have finished a respectable amount of them). So, Wii U's aren't that expensive compared to other consoles and there lineup is really pretty solid. Super Smash Bros, Mario Kart 8, Bayonetta 1/2, Rayman Legends, Child of Light and Wind Maker HD all look amazing. Now, the catch is the games are all god damn expensive. But then again, if I buy a Wii U with super smash bros a gamecube adapter and some controllers thats less than the cost of my graphics card, for a 1080p 60fps experience that I know is going to last me 100s of hours. So, do you guys think it is worth it?

Ok, fun fact. It seems that I have two accounts and I didn't even know. I was like wait thats a really old avatar, and only 3 posts what the... So thats kinda weird. Anyway, I'm back on the right account now and that was a lot of yes very fast so I guess thats gonna be my next purchase. Thanks guys! Though if anyone has any other opinions please let me know.

Since you're a PC gamer, Wii U is the most practical choice. You can play pretty much every PS4 or Xbox One game on PC aside from their exclusives, so I'd get a Wii U. To be honest I'd get one myself maybe for Christmas but I'm trying to save money. I might by one though with the extra money I have at that time. I have a 3DS and Smash Bros on that is so fun.

I have one and it is great. It isnt really serious, just having fun and chilling. Smash is great tho

 I saved up for 6 months (Hey, I Referee soccer games) and got The Legend of Zelda Edition Wii U. Definitely one of the best decisions I've ever made. The games are great, it can ACTUALLY run games at 1080P 60 FPS, and it's currently the only console to play new Nintendo games, if you like them (I do)

Doesn't have anything to do with the PC master race. I still play my PS3 plenty. However it does have to do with my own opinion on the matter.

 

I played with the Wii U a bit and I thought it was pretty silly. Look if you want the games that only Nintendo can offer, go for it.

 

If you just want a console, you can pick up a PS3 500GB for $250. If it has to be next-gen, I think the very acceptable price of $400 for a PS4 is worth it.

Yes you should. Matter of fact, I think I may be picking up my Wii U sometime today! :D

The thing is PS3 isn't getting any new games (and if they do they run like ass). No amazing games on the platform at 60fps and 1080p. I don't want a PS4 or Xbox One because I can run nearly all the games on them on my PC. The Wii U is a complimentary platform to PC, not a competing one (this is the difference compared to the other two consoles).

I'm not the most objective person ever on this topic, look at my avatar FFS, but as a Wii U owner here are the positives and negatives of the platform:

 

Positives:

- The five big Nintendo games: Smash Bros, Kart, Zelda, Metroid and Mario

- Nintendo Land. People mock it as a "casual party" game, which it is. But as party game it does it better than Wii Sports or Guitar Hero did

- The GamePad has its share of critics. However when you're watching the cricket or lying in bed playing 3D World? It'll make sense. It's a NVidia Shield for Nintendo games.

- It's not a powerhouse but developers for it are pushing style and framerate at the expense of stuff like AA, effects and shadow detail. IMO this is a huge positive.

- The Pro Controller is one of the nicest controllers I've ever used. Nicer than the 360's controller at least and the battery life is fantastic.

 

Negatives:

- They've been slow when it comes to a unified account system. If you buy a VC or indie game on the Wii U you don't get it on the 3DS. The wallet is shared but that's it

- Rumble on the GamePad is anaemic. It makes more noise than it does rumble. Not a huge deal when you're playing on the TV but it'll annoy others when you're playing off-TV

- There are only two low powered USB ports on the back, two on the front. If you wanted to play 8 player Smash with GC controllers, wired LAN and a USB powered HDD you'd need 7. Get a powered USB Hub

- And now the "biggest" negative. It's not selling well so therefore it's not getting big games like Assassin's Creed. But you have a PC anyway ;)

This is why the Wii U is the only "next gen" console I even have any desire at all for;

most consoles are trying (and failing :P) to be better than and replace PCs; Nintendo have stopped caring about trying to have powerful consoles, and IMO the way "next-gen" consoles try and be all powerful is pretty futile when they only manage to be about the same as a mid-end gaming rig, and then they go and do stupid things such as locking the FPS to 30, yet a slightly less graphically intense game running at 60 will be a nicer experience overall.

 

Nintendo, on the other hand, are trying to be really unique; it's not an expensive console, so it's good for a complimentary gaming rig, it's got what is still a very unique controller, which isn't great for super-accurate controls, but it's trying to be more casual than PCs, and similarly, rather than trying to make their graphics as near to reality as possible, they try to make them look pleasant and then make the experience as nice as possible, and, as well as having a lot of Nintendo-exclusives, their exclusives are genuinely unique, there are few to no games with the kind of style that Nintendo give their games.

 

On the other hand, there are very few PC-like games on the Wii, and that makes a lotta sense, as a console can't do as good of a job of being a PC, as...Well, a PC.

My wife and I have been mulling this over for the past week, too. She really wants to get one to get the Mario games. I just can't justify buying a console for two or three games. But they look like such fun...

I have to agree with many here.

It's a great console, and great buy, but that is assuming you have a gaming PC. The First and second party games really makes the console worth it, especially if you like to complete games in full or near full.

Yes get it! I seen a deal for £180 which includes bayonetta 2 (worth getting a wiiu just for this), wiiu party, wii remote plus and nintendo land. I would recommend mario kart 8, pikmin 3 and wind waker hd. You also have smash bros, zelda and xenoblade chronicles x coming up.

You can't forget about Super Mario Land 3D. Man so many levels all unique from each other. You wished tat many of them would have other similar levels.

YES(If you want to). I have The Legend of Zelda Limited Edition console. It's great. I'm also a HUGE Nintendo fanboy   :P

It's one of those consoles of which I don't consider the communities filthy console peasants

If you are into Nintendo's own library of titles, then absolutely hands down I would get it. I bought the Wii U for my daughter last year for Christmas and as a family we have a ton of fun with it. We own every single Nintendo Wii U game to date ( none of the 3rd party games, except Assassin creed, black Flag. What a waste of a game that is on the Wii U, the PC version is so much better.)

FYI, you can play wii games on the wii U, this opens up the game library. Also monster Hunter is a great game, just saying, there are more great game out there, you just have to look.
