Samsung XP941 using a PCI-E adapter...possible?

brighttail

Hey all,

Thought I might post this in the memory section as it really has to do more with memory than motherboard. So here is the deal. The Asus Formula z97 cannot handle an 80mm M.2 SSD like the XP941. The Hero CAN do it but really at only x2 speeds and Asus says it will bottleneck at around 850 MB/s. The XP941 is also optimized to run a PCI-E x4.

So I was wondering, if you slapped this chip onto a PCI-E x4 card (i've even seen some with a heat sink on it) and put it into the bottom PCI-E x8 slot at the bottom of either the Asus Hero or Formula, would:

- The computer recognize it if the M.2 was turned on in the BIOS
- Would it be bootable?
- Would there be issues with the bottleneck or would you get the full performance from the SSD?
- Could you put more than one on one of those cards and RAID them since you are putting them into a x8 slot?

Is any of this possible or feasible or am i just wishing too hard?

One of our customers reported this was possible with the ASUS Maximus VII Ranger Z97 motherboard.  Perhaps the same will work with the Formula version, and other ASUS Z97 boards as well.

I would like to share that the XP941 & Lycom DT-120 pcie-m.2 adapter combo works fine and boots on the ASUS Maximus VII Ranger Z97 motherboard. Just had to disable CSM from bios and load intel raid drivers during the Windows installation. Also had my sata drives setup as raid already.

Hi there.  It seems the answer is already out there. Apparently Asus includes a PCI-E x4 board for this purpose in their packaging for the Forumla. It wasn't included in the list of materials that i saw but after I looked at a few reviews, both said it came with it. So problem solved!

I've seen this and i've seen people who had to have those drivers and others who have not. I'll be prepared when I get it by having those drivers. I'm hoping it is much easier than having to go through, loading the drivers....

Cross-posting here ... because it seems to be a plausible solution as well...
