GTX 970 G1 Gaming or EVGA's FTW

WhiteSkyMage

hey guys,

Looks like those 2 GPUs are leading the whole market with the factory OC and dual bios(which I kinda love to have). I however heard people saying negative stuff like: Coil Whine on G1 Gaming and Bad heatsink contact on the EVGA's GTX 970s. Is there anything of that sort? Which of the two would you suggest?

all 970s have an issue with coil whine. Some more, some less. I would be more worried about the heatsink issue and lesser cooler of the EVGA

He only has the 980 but I'm pretty sure they are quite similar in terms of the cooler design.

i'm currently watching this video

evga guy in it says that they purposely had only 2 heatpipes for the plain sc acx 2.0 but not sure about the ftw 970 but the ftw 970 actually has 4 heatpipes as i could see in the picture that was shown in the video so far

Well, watch the video, the FTW has another design. So the problem with "2/3 heatpipes touch" is off this topic from now on. However, I hot another concern. EVGA did not use COPPER on that heatsink. I know copper is expensive these days but it can make big difference in cooling. I wonder if Gigabyte used copper or steel. Looks like steel but I don't know what's on the contact of the heatsink with the GPU chip itself.

i have no idea about that but chose evga if you want the best customer support you can get or gigabyte if you want a 3 fan design and a bit better cooling(i think the gigabyte has better cooling then the ftw acx 2.0 version)

Going back to the cards... This is the SSC GTX 970.

evga970-10b.jpg

And this is the FTW GTX 970:

HSF.jpg

So, I think it's better... No need to worry. It has Dual Bios and 1367 MHz factory OC which is pretty much the biggest factory OC for GTX 970. Yeah i would go with that one.

I would do a video with my full PC no worries...

However, one thing to note: As much as this card costs ($390), my CPU costs only $15 less. Can you guess which CPU is it?

The next one - 5820K... close one there :) - Haswell-E. Costs $375 but is a 6-core with 15MB Cache! :D

Well, that's why I will not even bother buying it.

You know why I wanted the G1 Gaming? Because of the 3 copper heatpipes. Copper is better in heat transfer, so that means better cooling. The G1 Gaming, both for 980 and 970 has thick heatsink and with 3 fans, it will have more air moving through, meaning a lot cooler. The COIL Whine is the only thing I would really hate and as I see, every 2nd customer on Newegg is saying that this card has noisy coil whine. Jayz got away lucky.

Everyone thought that G1 gaming will be the best card on the market - quiet and good for OCing, well, it's not quiet anymore! Go to back to EVGA if you want a good factory OC, or just take an Asus card and give it a try, might OC, but you are not guaranteed to even reach EVGA's clock on the FTW, not mentioning the Classy.

the strix has low quality parts on the pcb so i wouldn't recommend it but it does work but its not a "god" card as many people say
