Hi all,

I am thinking of upgrading my pc and had my eyes on Asus R9270-DC2OC-2GD5 ... well the name I found it as is Asus AMD Radeon R9 270 OC DirectCU II, 2048MB, GDDR5, 256bit, HDMI, 2x DVI, Display Port , so I think it's the same.

Anyways, all the searching I did I couldn't find out if it has AMD's ZeroCore feature, I think that's a really cool and helpful feature to have, since I don't play that much.

On Asus's website it doesn't say, but I figure/hope that they didn't update it. Also I think that's an AMD feature that comes along with catalyst . Am I right?  Say yes :)

Also, if you are kind, have two more related questions:

1. if anyone has a card with ZeroCore , is that a thing to notice ? like in power consumption, noise, speed, etc.

2. if anyone has this video card, or does know, it supports multiple displays? I currently have a amd card with Eyefinity feature to it, but when I tried adding a 3rd display I saw that it didn't work. Later I found out that my board can only support 2 displays, even though it has DVI,HDMI and VGA

Thanks a lot in advance!

no as far as I am aware its only AMD that have the 0core tech. However Im sure they have some form of ULPS mode that puts in in 'low gear' when not in use.

Yes, it supports zerocore.

1. Eh, it helps especially if you leave the system on when you're away.

2. It supports up to 6 displays. You can only use 2 of the dvi and hdmi ports and will need to use an active display port adapter for more displays. It's probably a similar case for your current card.

Thanks Altecice for your fast reply.

Thank you WoodenMarker more for your support, I'm counting on it. Also thanks for your explanations .

The reason I am going for a 'better' graphic card is that my current setup runs in dual graphics (ASRock FM2A75 Pro4 ATI AMD Radeon HD 7560D + SAPPHIRE HD 6670 1GB GDDR5  ) and the CPU temp when working goes to 54-61 degrees Celsius (and this concerns me).  So I will want a better video card and loose dual graphics, adding a new thermal paste (that I think it's better), and hope that temp goes down. I saw at a friend he's CPU temp was 12, way lower than room temperature, with a low budget cooler but indeed in idle. Mine  never goes down bellow 40, and that's not a problem, but above 55 I think it is.

So it will perform better with new video card and without dual graphics? Oh, and if RAM memory may be a factor, I note that I have 16 gb ddr3 2133 Mhz.

Thanks a lot again, and sorry for all this (maybe stupid) questions, but I feel like a kid in a toy store :)

Your friend's temp reading is incorrect--the cpu temps can't be lower than the that of the air you're using to cool it. Your load temps seem fine but 40c is a bit high for idle.

The 270 easily outperforms any hybrid cf.

so, its actually physically impossible to have your cpu below room temp

and  55 is perfectly fine temp you should only be worried if you are going above 80

thanks for tips. And since you seem to have the -STAFF- logo, I got an mysql error. Should I post it here, give it to you in private or leave it, you guys know about this things and it's nothing to worry about.

And is @Sharkyx1 right with the 55 temp ok? My CPU is AMD A8-5600K  and AMD says a max temp of 74.

Thanks

i was under the impression FX AMD chips were max of 70 but APUs were good for much higher

if the max is 74 then you should still be alright at 55

^Granted you're using the air in the room to cool the cpu and not something else like LN2.

Is the mysql error creating a big issue?

55c at load is fine.

@WoodenMarker no, it's just a piece of SQL query that went wrong.

Ok then, thanks a lot for clarification, you gave me more info in 30 mins than I searched in 30 days...really. God bless you :)

I don't know if I did the tag correctly, so I will just quote you to be sure.

Need one more advice:

I saw Linus add thermal paste in a specific way: a tiny drop in the middle and then he pressed the CPU cooler. On the other hand, in my country, another adviser which is older than Linus made a video and said to add a drop but to spread it with something so it will be thin and cover the entire area then put the cooler. The bad part of the second approach is that I had the paste spill out, but I know now I have to put less, but not know how much less.

Anyways, it's kind of 1-1 so I need a tie breaker, and you seem a qualified person to do that, so help please.

Thanks

You had tagged me correctly.

Either method is fine. The reason why people still debate about the method of application is because there hasn't been any solid evidence that shows one is better than the other.

@WoodenMarker man, this is worse, I can't even see a 4k vid on youtube, it's very fragmented, and with the last setup I could even see two at once, full screen on both monitors (1920x1080). Also when playing an old game, like counter-strike 1.6 I don't always have max 100fps, not it comes down to 80 ftps some times, and freezes are obvious. I didn't do something or this is how it suppose to work? Should I Overdrive my GPU ?

Have you tried the card in another system?

Overdrive?

The way you embed my profile doesn't give me a notification you replied to me--I just happened to come across this thread again. Just type the tag with @ in front of the name in the future.

@WoodenMarker  , sorry, I copy pasted and this editor copied the link also. Anyways, just have one system. But I will note that I have installed the new card without re installing OS(installed over two years ago), and it's win7. So I uninstalled the previous and add the new driver for current GPU.

And overdrive is the term that amd catalyst uses for overclocking. Should I do that for better performance, or is it useless ?

I have an theory that the grapfic part from cpu works way better and faster if used in dual graphics, and since I only let the new card take all the load, the integrated video in the cpu is not used resulting in worse performance. Am i right?

You shouldn't need to reinstall anything but the drivers when installing a new graphics card.

Overclocking probably isn't going to help--it seems like a faulty card and not that lack of performance. You should find another system to test it in to make sure.

No, that's incorrect. The 270 easily outperforms any hybrid cf.

you dont need or want ZeroCore. ZeroCore will trun off your second card(yes, its only works on more than one card config)for power save, and its only works on 290/x. The problem is, sometime the second card wont wake up.(a lot of times) MSI afterburner can turn of zerocore.

Oh yes, my rig without zerocore consume 108w from the wall at idle.
