Displayport to DVI and DVI to VGA?

minibois

In order to use both of my screens on my GPU, I have to use 2 adapters.

DVI to VGA and Displayport to VGA.

I have heard from a friend he uses DVI to VGA and he says it isn't that bad.

I have never heard of Displayport to DVI (mostly because I have never used Displayport)

So I would like to know if it is any good?

Is the adapter not to expensive and reliable?

Is Displayport to VGA (if it actually exists) better?

There are passive (unpowered) & active (powered by USB port) DisplayPort to DVI and DisplayPort to VGA converters. You do NOT want to try daisy chaining DP to DVI to VGA, as the DVI port from the DP->DVI converter will be DVI-D (Digital-only) and you need DVI-I (Digital/Analog) or DVI-A (Analog-only) ports to do DVI to VGA conversions, since VGA is an Analog data signal whilst DVI is natively Digital.

The ASUS VH222 has DVI-D input along with D-Sub (VGA), same with that BENQ GL2460, so as long as you have 2 DVI ports, DVI & HDMI or DVI & D-Sub (VGA) (or even HDMI & D-Sub) on the video card, you will NOT need to use DP->DVI, DVI->VGA or DP->VGA converters, as you can run both monitors natively on DVI, one one with a DVI cord & the other with HDMI<->DVI cord (HDMI plug on one end, DVI-D on the other, won't transmit audio though), or run one monitor with DVI (either DVI port or HDMI<->DVI cable) & the other with D-Sub (VGA).

My ASUS screen does NOT have DVI. It only has DSub/VGA. I checked the ports on it's back.

My video card only has Displayport and DVI.

I could go for DVI -> DVI (On my BENQ panel) and Displayport -> VGA (On my Asus panel, if DP to VGA is worth it)

If DP -> VGA does not exist or is not worth it, I will have to go for:

DVI -> VGA (for my Asus panel)

+

DP -> DVI (for my BENQ panel)

I would rather not use the HDMI on my BENQ panel for this, since I have my PS3 connected to it.

This does exist but it means you are converting from a digital signal to analog signal and you need expensive active converters.

DVI -> VGA (for my Asus panel)

This is the best thing to do but the DVI must be a DVI-I, not DVI-D.

My GPU has DVI-I, so DVI -> VGA should be possible.

Now I'll have to look for a DVI -> VGA adapter and also Displayport -> DVI.

Do you know any good DP -> DVI adapters? I've never used or seen one.

I have never used a DP to DVI either but they are only changing the pin layout, not the actual electrical configuration so they are pretty basic. Any ones will do.

The HDMI <-> DVI cord is for if there was HDMI on the video card going to DVI on the monitor, since electronically sending video data along HDMI or DVI is practically the same though DVI doesn't have the capability to carry audio data.

And checking the ASUS website for your monitor it ~should~ have DVI on it, unless you got an el-cheapo sub-version which dropped the DVI or has a non-working DVI input... Either way though, DVI-I to VGA passive converters would be fine.

I can't find my monitor online anymore, but I can assure you.. It's VGA only.
