Mini-News: Windows 10 Build 9860 has MKV support built-in

GoodBytes

Neowin reports that Windows 10 Preview Build 9860 has MKV video support out of the box.
Currently MKVs will play only with Windows Media Player 12, and not the Video Modern UI app.

screen_shot_2014-10-24_at_9.53.55_am.jpg

In addition, when you try to load an MKV file, Windows Media Player will say that it doesn't support this format, and ask you if you want to load it up anyways, Clicking on yes, will load the video successfully. This error could be that Windows Media Player needs to be updated, or the codec was not fully registered in the system (or they decided to keep the warning message as they are still doing testing on the codec).

If you want to test it out but don't have an MKV file, you can get a MKV test video here:

I noticed that MKV support was a feature requested a lot in the user feedback program.

Update - November 2

It's official!

Gabriel Aul, director of Windows program management, twitted yesterday, that Windows 10, will fully support, in-box, all types of apps: MKV support

They are finally updating it. Depending on how good it is, might just use that rather than MPC

Video playback in Windows Media Player has always felt a lot smoother than MPC or VLC to me for some reason, so this is great news!

Nice. Can't wait until I try W10 myself.  Does anybody know when the "preview" of W10 will be over? Did they announce it?

I wish win 10 had a gaming mode...like  optimizing the system to run  games as fast as possible.  I would also love if it had built-in VM.

The true king of free media  players out there is the  one and only....Daum Pot Player.

Accept no substitute.

it bitch slaps VLC

it also supports HEVC

Windows 10 is supposed to release sometime around August-October 2015, so in time for 2015 Holiday season. Although the Technical Preview will expire in April 2015. Keep in mind that there will also be a Consumer Preview and Developer Preview before launch as well.

I wish win 10 had a gaming mode...making games run as fast as possible.

The thing with that is that there really isn't much that can be done in terms of the OS that can make a game run faster. Most tools that claim to optimize your system for gaming do almost nothing to actually improve anything.

If you open Task Manager and then don't do anything, just let it sit you will see your computer hover around 1-5% CPU utilization.

Just make sure you aren't doing anything absurd while gaming like running a virus scan or some other intensive task and you will be fine.

Ultimately it comes down to the game developer to make sure their code is optimized well in the first place and for Nvidia and AMD to make sure their drivers are optimized as well.

Thanx. I will be using this is my OS until then :D (I have a back up of everything on my current laptop so I don't mind the bugs considering I have everything backed up).

What type of data does MS collect with this build?

Obligatory not using Windows Media Player master race post.

Our Grace. The Feathered One. He shows us the way. His bob is majestic and shows us the path. Follow unto his guidance and His example. He knows the one true path. Our Saviour. Our Grace. Our Father Birb has taught us with His humble heart and gentle wing the way of the bob. Let us show Him our reverence and follow in His example. Obligatory not using Windows Media Player master race post.

You know, Media Player 12 is not bad per se. It load video and music files instantly, and does a pretty darn good job.

And it's sufficient for most people. Sure you need to install a codec pack, but so what. DVD playback on Windows 7 is the best I experience, same as a DVD player. VLC doesn't do a great job, and PowerDVD is extremely bloated. I really miss DVD playback in Windows 8. Yes there is the Media Pack, I have it, but it uses Media Center, and that sucks. I mean it sucks that I need to load this big thing to play a DVD movie.

Pretty sweet, could have seen this coming because of the Xbone supporting MKV as well. However I'm still gonna use MPC-HC, a lot more options than the standard media player, at least the last time I used it.

Agreed, while I do use VLC for most things, when it comes to popping in a DVD you can't beat the ease of WMP.

It is highly requested, so hopefully you will be able to at least move them to the right side of bar.

Until it becomes like VLC and plays almost everything except  proprietary videos and music, i'm not using it.

Sound: Custom one pros, Audioengine A5+ with S8 sub.

I really don't see anything replacing VLC... ever... VLC has grown so large that it has more support than literally any media player in existence.
