The King is not dead. Hail to the King baby.

soggyfatman

For those of you who do not know the King, for shame. How dare you consider yourself a part of the pcmasterrace if you do not know your history!

Get your learn on here: https://3drealms.com/news/3d_realms-is-back/

The Duke Nukem franchise is one of the greatest, if not the greatest, series ever created. He has been iconic and a staple in every gaming library with his babe saving, pig cop killing, and catchy phrased games.

http://www.tomshardware.com/news/3d-realms-anthology-duke-nukem-wolfenstein-pc-gaming,27951.html

This is great news to the pc world. 3d Realms is starting again with some fresh faces. Now they did do a lot more than Duke, there was Commander Keen, Shadow Warrior, Wolfenstein 3d, and all sorts of other goodies. With these new faces, I dream of a future where we go back to our roots and prove there is more to life than what is coming out now. A simpler time indeed where we had health bars and no ammo clips. And 3d was just a sprite that rotated.

It should also be noted that the team has some original members and is not just some chumps jumping in. The tiny optimistic child part inside of me says "oooo yay! they will care!" but the much larger realistic part says "oh great, they will not stay true to themselves and try and match the garbage that is out now" However, I do have faith.

I swear if this turns in to a "Duke Nukem Forever was a terrible game" thread I will break off your head and shit down your throat.

No.. GabeN is the king.

He is our savior. The only shining light in the black hole of developers that just want to pump out cookie cutter games and not try. Duke is King.

Wait a minute... the article says these devs are behind wolfenstein 3D... but that was developed by id software with John Carmak writing 90% of the code solo... same with commander keen!

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

The Duke Nukem franchise is one of the greatest, if not the greatest, series ever created.

Not sure if sarcasm, so I'll treat it like it's the most serious statement ever.

Not even close. It was one of the better games in a very specific period, yes. But it was never anything more than that.

I don't understand this obsession with retro games. It seems like some people call them the greatest games of all time to make themselves feel special, or they have a really big nostalgia problem. The facts don't support these claims. Gameplay, UI, graphics, story, content, level design, sound, music etc. is all better in modern games. Take a look at Borderlands for example. Despite all of the faults, Borderlands games are dozens of times better than any of the Duke Nukem games. It's not sacrilege to say that. Nostalgia and desire to be a special snowflake won't change that.

Potatoes? Potatoes! Potatoes.

I agree with you to a point. However it is not easy to compare a game from the past based on ui, graphics, and sound to current games. Of course the new stuff is technically better because the technology is there. So you have to look at it at a much larger picture. You can claim nostalgia sure, but some games were just well made and fun. It would be like comparing movies.

I disagree with the statement that its one of the best franchises because there was only 1 absolutely great game in the franchise, Duke Nukem 3d.

As for modern games being better, i disagree. Modern games are designed excessively easy with shallow game mechanics, and then higher difficulties just is less effective health or more enemies requiring more practice to better memorize what the game throws at you and how to counter it, not actually getting better at executing mechanics. Not to mention Modern shooters are bad console ports. Combat is designed around the short comings of controllers. Sprinting and ads allows out of combat movement to be fast and fun, while slowing in combat movement to a crawl to help with the poor aiming of controllers. Random spread reduces the need to aim decently. Radar reduces the need to turn 180 degrees which can be a pain with a controller. And at close range, people can go from in front of you to behind you in a very short period of time, one hit kill melee attacks negates the need to be able to aim at close range. These are just a couple examples. Their multiplayer is built around the insecurities of console players. They are afraid of being bad, so they need matchmaking to ensure they average roughly half their games as wins. As opposed to the past where when you played against better players you enjoyed it because you actually learned how to play better and losing wasn't a big deal. You need health regen so you can camp the same spot because that is what multiplayer shooters are for the most part in this day and age. Its not like the lack of real pc shooters can be justified with a low audience either. CS GO and TF2 are the two most played shooters on steam and CS GO has more daily players on PC then BF4 has on all 5 platforms combined, despite BF4 being newer, and a higher budget, and designed around consoles. The PC master race is strong, the problem is 99% of developers even if they were part of the master race in the past are currently console peasants. Cliffy B and Bosskey studios is a prime example of this, they're making a PC exclusive arena shooter and they're adding iron sights and making you less accurate when you fire while moving and tweeted asking if people prefer controller or m&k for shooters... They're stuck in the console mindset.

Anything that keeps this franchise away from randy and Gearbox.Everything coming out of gearbox is absolute garbage IMO, take Half life opposing force and some recent examples including that recent $60 Borderlands DLC which is nothing but a franchise about  doing chores with your buddies.

Sent from my Nexus 7 (2013).
