Codio - The Most Powerful Web Based IDE!

NeatSquidYT

Hi,

So at school at the moment we're using a website called "Codio" in which you can create an account, and code in Javascript, CSS, HTML, Python and Ruby (and a lot more). Plus for all of you gits, it supports GitHub :D The creators of the site came in to my class yesterday and recorded us using it, and then I thought I might as well make a review of it so here it is.

So, what's the advantage over using Notepad++ or Dreamweaver?

Well, I think it's a lot easier to use and manage tabs than Notepad++ due to its very handy Panel design, which allows you to create more by going into View>Panels. With this you can create a cool, easy to use design like this:

Plus, you have a wide range of themes to choose from!

post-96655-0-06219000-1414154296_thumb.p

And the best feature is.... AUTOMATIC SAVING! YES! EVERY WORD YOU TYPE WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE SAVED!!

And yes, Dreamweaver is more powerful with some handy design features, but I'm not paying 500 quid for it, I mean, come on.

The best part is that once you've created your account, you can access it anywhere on any device, as long as it has Javascript support (I believe).

You can either be a cheapskate like me, or you can actually pay for unlimited private projects (only 1 is available if you don't pay, although you can have unlimited public) for only 5 quid!

So, when you make your website (or whatever you do), you are given a free randomly generated address. E.g. random-word.codio.io

I don't know wether there is FTP support though, although I'd presume so.

Is there anything else you want me to touch on? Just ask!

Thanks for reading.

Are you only recommending this for HTML and CSS? Seems like the other languages you listed, you can just use eclipse or something. Maybe some stuff on the other languages?

And this is news how?

I'm assuming he is using the reviews part of the subforum, which is somewhat wrong anyway. >.<

But that much for all of their programs is better than money for one at the same. Especially for workstation and production users. Along with being able to edit images, you could put on your site with photoshop, lightroom, et cetera.

120 = a lot of money. It's only worth it if you make money out of your sites, and all I want to do is make a Christmas List :P

As far as text-based editors/ lightweight IDEs go, you don't get better than Emacs.

If you are complaining that $120 USD is expensive and I have to pay significantly more for it considering currency exchange, it should be cheaper where you are compared to me.

cc is more like $80 a month given most devs will use more than one

it does suck....it never puts code in semanticly, its so picky about rendering pages, too exspensive and "heavy"

all you need is a text editor + firefox/chrome + filezilla.....job done

True. I have a friend who's a massive Dreamweaver fanboy, then again he says that he says he has a great PC, but then admits to turning down all settings "Because I play competitive".

Well I have to say that I'm happily amazed by how good this actually works. It's a cool system and great for managing websites as far as I can tell. It's cloud based which is the future imo, some time we will only have a computer with an internet connection and we will have servers doing the work somewhere else. This is a step in that direction :)

Only the pricing puts me off a bit, as it's still 7$ per month for me (even with student discount) which counts up to a 84$ a year pricing which is particularly free.
