I own my own server, but it's colocated and hosted overseas in a datacenter.

I got a Dedi from OVH in France, Live in the UK my self but it hosts all my websites, teamspeak, couple of other services(BTSync etc..)

I also have a VPS in Neverlands that has my VPN on it so I can play lan games with my friends over the VPN. So it sees each other like we all at the same house :) Thats from budget VM

i've run a server at home for years, i use my old hardware for it. I use it as a file/web/FTP server, sometimes also game server. Right now its running windows 7, and thats because i used to use it as an HTPC as well and i needed bluray playback on it. I use an ITX machine for that now so i'll probably reinstall it sometime to something else, windows server maybe...

In case you want to know... it started as a P3 450 then went on as a athlon 2000+, athlon 2800+, C2Q Q6600 to the now AMD Phenom x6 1090T. It'll become my FX 8350 some day....
