NVIDIA TurfEffects

TOMPPIX

NVIDIA Turf Effects is a new NVIDIA GameWorks technology which empowers users to simulate and render massive grass simulation with physical interaction. Grass blades can be represented with a resolution as low as 3 triangles to several 100 triangles per blade by using continuous level of detail. This allows millions of grass blades to be simulated.

I hope the next elder scrolls game uses this!!

I'm definitely looking forward to this. I don't like it when grass just flattens or parts immediately when you touch it.

Not very realistic, is it?

Yeah I mean the arma engine does it a little, you can hide in grass and it flattens when you go over it, but its nowhere near this dense or detailed

*puts on ghillie suit*

Also something like STALKER would be good with it too

Yeah, perhaps I should have said that :P though some genres would benefit more, like Sniper or something

sounds difficult to render with other things going on in the game

maybe just remove the shadows and might be good

Yeah, something like a racing game won't benefit that much..

This will be awesome once games start to include this in games. Hopefully it's not crazy demanding.

That looks good. Too bad they will promote it in a way which is harmful to the industry, because technically it is impressive.

That's fancy. I just hope it's not going to be be 3-4 generations before we actually see it implemented in games, like so many of these things.

And naive as this sounds, it'd be nice if it wasn't Nvidia-exclusive. I have a Nvidia card myself, but exclusivity is a sure-fire way to make sure it stays a rarely-implemented gimmick.

well if it puts your mind at ease, GrassFX is open and probably is or will achieve the same thing as NV's turfEffects.

The AMD version doesn't look as realistic to me though. having such large boulders rolling over the vegetation would definitely flatten it permanently, not have it magically rise up again after a few seconds of movement.

Welp
