KRK 6 G3 or something else?

Tomoko

So I'm looking at buying a pair of KRK 6 G3's. I won't be doing any kind of production with these, they are just for listening to music. I listen to electronic, metal, and j/kpop, so bass and clarity are essential - not really sure if the KRK's are considered "fun" or accurate monitors. I do plan on getting a sub in the future.

Any other brands/models I should be looking at? Or should I get the KRK 6's?

I'd get the Krk 6 G2s and buy them used for a cheap price. G3s cost more and less people are selling them used, G2s have a lot of producers moving up the food chain and selling old gear. The Krk Rokits are relatively colored monitors with a little bit more bass than neutral.

OK Here's my 2 cents on KRK. . . . They seem to be the safe option and that's not a bad thing. Especially if you're not using them to produce. Whilst I wouldn't consider them to be top of the line monitors, compared to MicroMain27 for example but I know alot of "bedroom" (some who've had hits on major labels albeit) who use them, they're kinda the standard for monitors in the lower/mid tier. I have Rokit 5 G2s and they sound phenomenal. I'd suggest buying foam isolation pads too, they really helped with my bass response. try and wire them up using XLR or TRS if you can.

I have tried previously before I settle for these using off a Denon DM39 amp, Tannoy Mercury V1s and Roth Oli 1's . . . It might have been the amp I was using as I don't think Denon have particularly good mid range sound, I've moved that over to my TV to run when I have my PS4 on, but the KRK's have made a world of difference compared to the set up just mentioned. Running mine through a Focusrite 2i2

You should probably list the prices of the items you mentioned.

well the micromain27s are like $10k hehehe

tannoys and roth oli's are both £100 a pair, but tbh they're hi-fi speakers, so it was more fool me for using them on my computer. . . The Tannoy's especially need to be on stands in the middle of a room (say a mtre away from back and side wall), roth oli's were just too small to drive properly, only 4inch drivers and a very small cab. I picked them up second hand for £40 n couldn't resist the offer.

the denon dm39 retails for about £190. but again it was my bad for buying a unit with that dressed up hi-fi sound.

I'll just be running it off my Little Dot Dac with balanced XLR I think. I'll go see what my local music store will let me try out but I think I'll probably buy a pair of KRK 6 G3 new...today.

Ever thought of getting a sub for your KRK 5's? Or are you pretty satisfied with its bass quantity?

What's really the difference between 5 and 6? Just the size of the low frequency driver? I mean since I'll probably get a sub anyway should I just get the 5's instead?

Pretty much. I think the 5s alone will pretty bad without a sub, it's not going to be fun until you get a sub. It also depends on what sub you get and the crossover. My sub is shit (z2300 sub), so I want my Rokits to do more of the low end work as much as possible because it is much more detailed. A lot of cheap subs are not much better for anything other than making low sounds without regard to quality. And I don't feel like investing that much in a quality sub when I already have my headphones as the primary critical listening device.

Yes the difference is just the size of driver, but apparently there's quite a substantial difference in sound between the 5 and 6, also some people say 8's are over powering in some cases. As for a sub for 5's. . . it wouldn't hurt, I personally don't listen to the kind of music that requires a sub really, plus my mother's downstairs and would moan about the noise.

Even though 5 inch drivers aren't that big, the cab which their housed in is really well designed and the front ported slot helps deliver a bit more bass than you're really hearing (that could be a good thing or bad thing for producers)

Well I managed to find a pair of KRK 5 G2's used. I bought it. Hooked it up and...not very impressed.

It certainly has the clarity and detail. Certainly.
But it lacks oomph. Needs a sub...

See? Toldja. Need a sub for sure. I'm not a basshead, but I wouldn't dream of using the 5s without a sub. Even the 6s I think there's something missing. Never tried the 8s, not sure if I need to ever especially given the price.
