CPU suggestion needed! (intel only)

i am building a new pc for a family member whos pc got hit by lightning and took out more than just a power supply meaning the parts i needed to get it back and running are only available on ebay....and not cheap so the age of the pc isnt worth the price.

they will be using this pc for these tasks:

microsoft office

photo editing

video editing

light gaming (they have kids who like sims games)

heavy internet browsing

google earth (not to intensive) and every other day to day task:

they also want this pc to last a long time (they kept their old one for 8 years)

here are the parts i have so far:

motherboard- decide when i get a cpu decision

ram- kingston hyper x blue 8gb kit

ssd- crucial 240gb m500

corsair 430w psu

they are using the same case, gpu (model not known as i havent seen it yet but it is pci and it is good), optical drive, card reader

i was thinking along the lines of a core i5 4590 as they wont ever overclock

any better suggestions as this pc has to last minimum of  5 years

never heard of the 4590 but the 4670 will be fine for their uses

hell i don't know if they even need that

but quad cores will probably be low end by the 5th year anyway so you should be ok

Remember to follow your topics and quote other members :D

If you want it to last for that long, then you can easily go with 4460, or 4440 with  a H87/97 Mobo (The cheapest ATX mobo here is MSI H97 PCMate, but any will actually do). As for very light gaming, it seem that Sims will need some better specs (newer versions), so why don't you throw in it 260x/265/750-Ti O.o

4590 with a H97 would be perfect

Intel Xeon 1231v3, just a little more than the i5 4690. It is basically a i7 4790 without integrated graphics (you need a GPU).

Has hyperthreading over an i5 = better and faster rendering, etc.

Get a nice H97 mobo with that and you're set :)

Do you really need a mid tier one? I find the pentium G3258 good if you need to shave some cash off.

if the video editing is heavy, then the 4690 is best option. If its light and budget is a concern, I would go with something like a 4130 or 4330. Plenty of power to do all you are looking for depending on the video editing.

I suggest Xeon E3 CPU - http://ark.intel.com/products/75054/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E3-1230-v3-8M-Cache-3_30-GHz

And H97 motherboard, that supports it. It will be benefical for video editing and for photo editing if you do more than one export at the time (Lightroom).

Only drawback is that you need any kind of dedicated GPU, because this CPU does not have integrated GPU. But any kind of graphics card will work.

Xeons are like i7, but (mostly) without iGPU, lower TDP, runs cooler, are made for 24/7 work.

I have one in my workstation, and it is great - working on photos, videos, games. It just works great, fast, reliable.

Forgot the most important - Xeon usually is at price of an i5.

Intel Xeon 1230 V2 | Gigabyte GA-H61M-S | Kingston 4Gb RAM 1333Mhz | Seagate 1TB  | Fractial Design Arc mini | Windows 10
