Help on building new mid-range gaming rig

Alhaza

Hi guys!

I am looking for some comments on possible builds for a mid-range gaming rig.

I am from Singapore, so here's the pricelist I am looking at:

http://www.bizgramasia.com/01%20Bizgram%20Asia%20Simlim%20Square%20October%2019th%202014%20pricelist.pdf

I have around S$1500 to spend, and I have listed down a preliminary list of components I would want:

Intel i5 4690 + Asus H97 Pro Gamer

Kingston HyperX PC1600 Fury 8GB Kit

Kingston V300 128GB SSD

Western Digital Blue 7200RPM 1TB

Asus GTX970 STRIX OC

Corsair CS750M 80+ Gold Modular 750W

Should I go for the i5 4690 + H97 Pro Gamer or take the i5 4590 + Z97-A (+$13) or even the i5 4490 + Z97-A (-$8)? (Oomph vs Upgradability)

I am not really an overclocker, but the SLI sounds good for future upgrade.

Would also appreciate comments on the other components. Do they have any known issues? Are there better alternatives at around the same price range (+/-$20)? =)

Thank you very much!

EDIT: Removed 4-way. haha! Just SLI sounds good enough.

I5-4690k over the 4690 for overclocking potential and higher stock clocks. Take the Asus Z97-A/AR or MSI Z97-G55 SLI to go with it.

The memory is fine but I recommend G.SKILL instead, G.SKILL is the best

The Kingston V300 is still using crap NAND flash I believe. Get the Crucial MX100 or Samsung 840 EVO instead.

ASUS GTX970 is fine if silence is important to you. Otherwise I would recommend the EVGA ACX 2.0 FTW or Gigabyte G1 gaming instead.

For a 750W PSU the EVGA G2 is undefeated. Try getting that one instead.

Also you will NOT be able to run 4-way SLI on Z97 unless you get a motherboard with a PLX switch (which are expensive motherboards). Without one you are limited to 2-way SLI. Also the GTX 970 is limited to 3-way SLI. YOU need the GTX 980 for 4-way.

Are the better options (Price/performance included) for 4-way SLI Z97.

RIG: I7-4790k @ 4.5GHz | MSI Z97S SLI Plus | 12GB Geil Dragon RAM 1333MHz | Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 970 (1550MHz core/7800MHz memory) @ +18mV(Maxed out at 1650/7800 so far) | Corsair RM750 | Samsung 840 EVO 120GB, 1TB Seagate Barracuda | Fractal Design Arc Midi R2 (Closed) | Sound Blaster Z                                                                                                                        Getting: Noctua NH-D15 | Possible 250GB Samsung 850 Evo                                                                                        Need a console killer that actually shits on every console? Here you go (No MIR/Promo)

This is why you should not get an FX CPU for ANY scenario other than rendering on a budget http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/286142-fx-8350-r9-290-psu-requirements/?p=3892901 http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/266481-an-issue-with-people-bashing-the-fx-cpus/?p=3620861

Never go 4 way SLi.  Even 3 way is against my recommendation.  They don't scale linearly, it gets worse the more cards you add.

Your build is decent as it is.  PC Themes is usually a little cheaper, but the CPU+Mobo combo is cheaper at Bizgram.  Getting a whole system should net you a small discount as well.  What casing are you going with?

I've only ever seen 1 SLI config scale perfectly but that was in valley/crysis with 4 GTX titans (Not blacks)

Yeah, Sorry. I just listed it down from the feature list haha! But actually 2-way SLI sounds good enough as an upgrade option in the future.

I still have no casings in mind, would probably go in and check the designs first, and then decide accordingly

Depends how long you want to keep this PC.  If you're gonna keep this for 3-5 years, investing a little bit more for a CPU that can OC might be a good choice.  Btw yeah, don't get the V300, they ar eusing the new craptastic NAND on them.  Get an EVO.  $10 more at PC Themes, Bizgram doesn't seem to list it in their brochure curiously.

They have it at a different category of its own at $115 for 120GB

Ge the EVO then.  Good SSD for pretty cheap.

Thanks for the advice!

Will 750W Power Supply be enough or is it too much? And is the Corsair one alright?

750w is alright and Corsair is a good brand.  The CM range is a mid range PSU but its good enough.
