Help Me Pick a Card

Seilu

I am having troubles choosing a card. I am building my first gaming PC, in a bitfenix prodigy, I am deciding between, the 970 (I am fine with waiting for them to come in stock), 770, or the R9 290. I mostly play league of legends but will maybe be expanding my game library with this card. I play on a 1080p monitor and need decent frames on at least medium-high graphics. I don't have a set budget but would like to keep it low if possible, obviously.

Thanks

970 is great! There's a reason it's selling so well.

but do I NEED that much? I could be saving $100 if I go for a different card.

You won't need it for league of legend, but it depends what are you expanding your library with.

What costs $100 less that will last you equally as long?

If you can afford a 970 go that route.

If you plan to expand your library then might as well be assured you'll be playing pretty much any game at 1080p/60 high settings

Screw it, the extra money will be worth it in the long run, I will just buy a 970. Now the question is, which model/make should I get?

Something like a 280 or 760 would already play most games on high/ultra just fine and upcoming games at high settings. Even so, the 290 presents a pretty good value due to dropping prices: http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/part/xfx-video-card-r9290aedbd

If money really is tighter, you could just go with a 280 which would still fufill your needs: http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/part/club-3d-video-card-cgaxr9287o

got the G1 its awesome

all in all you shuld coose the one thats suits you best

the g1 got the best OC capabilities and the highest factory oc but its fraking long for a single core card imo

asus strix for the quietest cooler i guess

msi for something between them

keep in mind that on 1080p you will never get enoght load on any of them to stress them to get actually loud unlike youre planning to play stuff like crysis 3 on ultra with 4k dsr or something

Usual 3 year?  The box is at home, I'm assuming it's 3 years as usual cos I remember the sticker on the box said so.  At least it is for my local distributor.

How is the warranty on the G1?

3years with terms like most other manufacturers

ocing without overvolting is ok for them (like evga)

removing cooler and everything like that is not ok ->  warranty void

oh and coilwhine isnt rma-able most of the 970 got a little coilwhine on em but you can reduce it to near not noticeble by locking the framerate on you displays refresh rate using vsync, gsync etc.

no i dont know exactly so someone who cares about rma-ing cars which had been watercooled my correct me there

they may not see it as a sin but if you add a watrblock to a card you may want to oc it and ov too

evga may build a 970 with a stock waterblock but thats not guaranteed

as i said i dont know if its ok for them to do it you may read their terms in the official policy sheet

it varies on the responsible rma-office guy too

i had my gainward gtx 760 rma'd and half of the DO NOT REMOVE! WARRANTY VOID! stickers were not there anymore bit he said it wasnt a problem at all

Just need to get into the habit of testing everything outside before installing everything, previous builds I have not done that, I have been lucky in the sense that all of the components worked and were not lemons.

I'll keep the stock cooler around, just incase..

Thats a smart idea :D

Keeping the stock parts is highly recommended when you work on cars or motorbikes so why shuldnt it be like that with pc components as well? ;)

If rmaing wont work you can much easier resell it with the original cooler.Tthats my personal experience though.

One of my friends had like four gpus from amzon this year (direct amazon purchase not marketplace stuff) and only payed shipping and eventually price diffrences between them. And the full price on the first one of course.

3 months backshipping ftw

I got my Gigabyte windforce 970 about a week ago , people say its over kill for a 108p screen but to be completely honest its the sweet spot for 1080p , Hitman Absolution uses 3gb of vram at 108op so the 4gb on the 970 helps alot , plus with games like BF4 i can max it out with 150% resolution scale and still stay above 60 fps ( no AA ) , i also OC'ed mine 150 mhz on the core and memory which seemed to help alot :)

970 gets my vote :)

My Pc Specs

CPU : AMD FX-8350 @stock w/Noctua NH D-14   Mobo: Asus M5A99FX    Ram : 16gb Corsair XMS3 @1600mhz    GPU : Gigabyte GTX970 Windforce OC 4GB @1429mhz   SSD: Sandisk X110 256gb    Case: Be Quiet Silent Base 800 Windowed  PSU: EVGA 850w g2  Peripherals : Corsair K70 w/Red Switches , Logitech G502 , Samsung SyncMaster S22B300 (1920x1080) , Ttesports Shock one headset , Phone : HTC one A9
