Gaming pc

Ninjah Tigah

Hey, just a quick question on whether or not this build is okay, I didn't go with 8gig of ram because I could get the 16gig for more or less the same price as the 8gig and I got the 1000 watt power supply because it was on offer and the 10 year warranty got me :P - Just stating for understanding. :)

The build is - > http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/zsdVLk

Also, the reason for the 970 sli is that I intend to be playing at 1440p at ultra and trying to future proof as much as possible, especially considering the performance boost of 970 sli vs a single 980. I realise that getting the single most powerful card you can is what's recommended. However, I know I wont be able to afford to upgrade from a single 980 to sli 980's further down the line and by the time I can, wont be worth it and well, paying an extra 100 is worth the performance increase. :D

So my question is: Is there anything you guys would recommend to replace?

I thought about choosing an i7 over the i5 but since this will be solely for gaming, I wasn't sure. The other reason is that I wasn't sure what I could sacrifice to make up for the cost of the i7.

What would you recommend?

Edit:

Also, because people were asking, in regards to that 1800 euro (removed from title ) sorry for the € - euro conflict Minibois. ;) if below 1,800 is best obviously but trying to maintain roughly same performance for gaming. Was no alternative for me because I'm living in Ireland and well, no Irish part picker. :D

1.4k pounds roughly, I would change the prices on part-picker to what I got them at and will do so. :)

ROG board is a waste of money and so is EVGA P2. Get a regular Z97 board and an EVGA G2.

Firstly, where are you from? You want an €1800 build but use the UK pcpartpicker. I require (and everyone else would be most appreciative of) clarification..

the Evga p2 was only a euro more expensive than the g2 at the time so was worth it for me. Also, what board would you recommend? MSI Z97 Gaming 7/5? :)

Apart from that is there anything that's wrong with it?

Why spend more than I have to Swindlr?

Originally was going to go with the h100 but decided against it, I've never been too keen on the idea of a premade watercooler being inside of a computer worth so much if it breaks - I know they're reliable, I'm not going to argue about that. However, In time I may go with a custom waterloop. the Evo 212 will suit my needs for now, most other fans (noctua included) just simply look like a car engine inside of a computer - I realise there's smaller fans that are very good but I still have to decide on whether or not to go with a custom waterloop. That's why I went with the unlocked version incase I do decide I'm going to Push it - Now I can't stop listening to Salt N Pepa... :'(

I wouldn't call the one I chose 'indecent'. FSP OEM! FSP is perfectly decent.

Compared to the G2 it isn't.

Hehe, I notice everyone loves Corsair's cases on here. Thanks for the builds too. How would the 212 evo hold up against the zalman? I realise some people think the 212 evo is over-rated. :P

If two items are both good, and one is somewhat better than the other, the other doesn't automatically become shit. Take Manchester United, at the moment they're below City in the league. Does that mean Manchester United are indecent?

There's a touch too much opinion here, I daresay abnegation and rather too little objective council.

Not over-rated, overly endorsed. You'll find there are many 120mm tower coolers that perform more or less the same. But people stick to what they know, which in most cases isn't enough to encompass a larger pool of items to recommend. Perfect example is the Enermax ETS-T40. That and the Hyper 212 are almost identical, even in price they are damn similar, but try to find someone who recommends it over the Hyper 212 Evo. I've only seen one person in these forums recommend that over the Hyper 212 evo, but for the Hyper 212 I've seen dozens of recommendations.

NEX review - http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/EVGA/NEX750G/1.html

G2 review - http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story&reid=380

For £4 extra I know which one I would buy.

Neither are a bad choice. Since £4 is the difference, I'd probably choose the G2 as well. But that doesn't change the fact the NEX is a good power supply which was the premise of this discussion to begin with. You haven't been able to say or prove it's indecent though which was your position in this discussion, only less good. That does not make it shit.

Did you even read the review of the NEX?

Here is the summary in case you missed it:

Noisy fan at high speeds

loose voltage regulation on all rails apart from 5V

Crossload test results

3.3V rail failed on 2nd advanced transient response test

The G2 is built on a better platform and has a better oem. You also get hybrid fan mode.

You can try and make as many excuses as you want. The simple fact is the NEX is a poor choice when compared to the G2.

Here's the other half, since you deliberately omitted it:

  • Delivered full power at 45°C
  • Efficient
  • Good ripple suppression at +12V, 5V and 5VSB
  • Great amount of cables/connectors
  • Only uses Japanese caps
  • Excellent voltage regulation at 5V
  • 5-year warranty (EVGA informed us that they offer a free upgrade to a 10 Year warranty on this model, after it is registered on their website)

What's more the top problem that techpowerup had in the review was the price. The review was based on the fact that it was on release $140. It ain't that now. You can get it for less than $100. That rather negates a good portion of the negative review. The score would rise somewhat if reviewed now.

I already said if the price difference was £4, it'd take the G2. But it won't be that for everyone now will it?

So lets get down to the crunch. Comparatively, which to buy? For £4 extra the G2 wins, that is obvious. If the difference is $30 (that's the minimum difference at the moment in the USA) and that $30 is pushing the budget against everything else in the build? If you have to buy it, the NEX will perform fine. The NEX is also the cheapest 750w modular PSU in the USA at the moment after MIR, that means plenty of the people doing specs in this forum are going to use it in their specs. Subsequently lot's of budget minded people are going to buy it.
