970 vs 980?

JacobiYounger

I'm building a new computer, and I'm having a hard time deciding.. I have the money, so I don't really care about the price. It's more if I need it or not.

I just want to be able to play games with a very high fps. I've heard the 980 is more overkill, and I won't need all the extras.

What should I do?

If money isn't a problem then definitely the 980

p.s. I'm jealous

The 980 is overpriced. It's almost twice the price of a 970 and only performs 15-20% better at best. Go for a 970, wasting money is bad even if you can afford to.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

Like I said I don't mind spending the money IF I need it. But if its going to be something that's so over kill that I won't need it, then I won't buy it.

We can spec a PC for you, where do you live? What's your budget? What do you intend to do with this new PC? What do you require in the way of OS, monitor, optical drive, peripherals?

Someone made me this list a while ago, and I was ganna use this. My budget is around 1.3-1.4k. USA Missouri. Mostly gaming, some video editing but nothing hardcore. Windows 7, prob no optical drive.

But if you have any recommendations on something I should upgrade/downgrade let me know.

More questions for you; what monitor do you have, what is it's maximum refresh rate and what resolution.

As for the build so far: This will destroy anything at 1080.

I think he'll be even happier with a better saving. For less than the cost of one GTX 980, you can get 2 R9 290s.

Ze price my dear fellow. That GPU is less than half the price of the cheapest 980. You can bet which would be better, a 980 or 2 R9 290s. Pro tip: it ain't gonna be the 980!  :P

Some wise advice there. I, myself, would just go with the GTX 970. :)

What's more, that monitor you have is woefully inadequate for any of the top line cards from either company. If you got a GTX 980 to play on that monitor, you would have to be the most foolish consumer since...........fuck knows when, forever!

What you need therefore is a great graphics card that isn't overly expensive and can sustain you before and after you get a nice new shiny monitor. For the time being, I would suggest a nice 1920x1080 monitor that's relatively inexpensive and will stand you in good stead as a secondary monitor until Free-Sync comes.

So, you're saying screw the 970/980 and just get 2 of those? I've never messed with 2 cards before at once. I think it would just be better for me to just try the 970/980?

Who here is just saying the GTX 980, just because they like the GTX 980, without even considering the price?

The exact same can be said for everyone not considering the R9 290's.

What I'm saying is you should save up your money. Put that extra $300/$400 towards a new monitor. I have an inexpensive (but not shit) monitor added to the list for you. When Free-Sync comes, you can grab yourself a compatible monitor comparable with the RoG Swift; a nice 2560x1440 monitor with 144hz refresh rate and all the bells and whistles.

I gotta ask, are you an AMD fan (note, I didn't say fanboy)?

I'm a fan of price vs performance. Of all the enthusiast class cards rolling around, the R9 290 is by far the cheapest. Anyone buying the GTX 980 who doesn't require cuda technologies and are buying it because it's the new thing, they're halfwits. Halfwits with too much money.

Well I'm not going to deny that AMD GPUs are good value per $, but I just would want to make sure that you're not pushing him to get a AMD GPU because it's your personal preference or because you have a bit of a bias towards AMD GPUs. It has to be a non-bias and fair recommendation that you can honestly say would be best for him. Just think about that, please.

I just wanted to know differences/which one I should get between the 970/980. I think the common answer was 970, or just get 2 r9 290s.

Do you think I was recommending AMD GPU's to people during the bitcoin/litecoin mining craze, when newegg and ncix and everyone else in North America was showing their naked avarice? The short answer is no.

The long answer is no, nein, non, niet, nej, nop, nada, of course not, nah.

I certainly don't need to think about it. Nor do I appreciate the implication that I cannot think unless prompted to do so by someone else. So thinks, but think you not.
