This question is asked so many times. A quick search on LTT would've gotten you the exact same answers you're getting now.

I have seen a German PC magazine testing alternative paste and ketchup turned out to be even better than retail thermal paste. My conclusion: Don't spend much money on it!

Issue is they'd dry out very quickly.

My preferred thermal paste is MX-4, however I use MX-2 because 30g tubes are like £12 (a 4g MX-4 tube lasts me a few weeks).

But yes, there are some bad pastes. Mostly generic tat. One time at the shop where I work I had to go and find an old cooler out the back, scrape the past off that (it was fairly recent, like 3 weeks) and apply that to the CPU, and it was still about 25c better.

This is sorta hijacking a thread for my own question, but hopefully the OP will get some use out of it too: For someone who buys a tube of thermal compound and then uses an amount the size of a grain of rice maybe 2-4 times a year, is MX-4/MX-2 still the best? I've heard some thermal compounds have shelf-lives and become less effective over time, yet even a 4 gram tube can still last me a few years with my usage habits.

Edit: Question already answered, if I'd just read the thread.

I'm surprised no one has mention prolimatech pk-3. It is one of the best paste regardless of its moderated and good contact of the IHC

I don't think ketchup would last much
