Is 144hz useful only for gaming?

esthreel
Go to solution Solved by Oshino Shinobu,

144Hz is pretty much only really good for gaming, yeah.

4K has scaling issues with texts and such, it can be annoying for web use and things like that.

I'd go for the IPS panel and get nicer colours. Dell U2414H is good.

//EDIT

OK guys there is a new player in town! So dirt cheap. Do you think it a lot worse than Dell U2414H?

http://www.amazon.co...r/dp/B00IJS6QF8

I can get it for £115 with tax. (180 US Dollar)

//EDIT

Hello everyone,

I am considering to replace my old TN monitor and I am a bit lost.

So there are three ways to go:

  • 144 Hz TN 1080p
  • 60 Hz TN 4K
  • 60 Hz IPS 1080p

I have a 4770k with 840 PRO SSD and a Logitech G602 mouse with overall very snappy machine.

Would a 144 Hz benefit in making my PC even more responsive? Like a page scrolling, or any other movement on the screen? Or the only benefit is running games @ 120 FPS?

If it is not that useful outside gaming, how bad is 4K? have a 1920x1200 notebook and it makes web unusable, I have to set up default zoom in chrome and still sometimes adjust zoom level per website individually. This problem is non existent on my 24" 1080p monitor, most of the content is perfect for this pixel density, aspect ratio and resolution. I love the IPS 2K on my LG G3 ant PLS on my Nexus 10, but Windows is really terrible at scaling. So 4K not yet? Or you can make it right?

And the third option. 60 Hz is not that bad, to be honest. I run most of my games around 60, video is 30 only with some exceptions so maybe there is no point going higher? The big thing I don't like about my current display is color. I see banding in skin tones, shadows. Contrast is just BAD. So maybe just go for some Dell 24" 1080P IPS?

What do you think guys?

SNIP

120hz helps in windows too, with mouse movements, dragging and dropping, scrolling etc etc etc, everything is a lot smoother

Why not get some middle ground and go with a 1440p 27" display? They do not suffer the scaling issues that 4k has, they provide better detail than 1080p screens and come in either 60hz IPS and 120hz TN

If you dont like bad coluour and stuff why not go for IPS, either 1080p 24" or 1440p 27", 60hz, it gives a nice balanced experiance with great visuals, and its easier to run than 4k

If you're really into FPS I'd go with the 144Hz monitor if not, I'd just go with the 1080p IPS display for dem purdy colours.

If you're not that much into gaming don't take a 144hz. Sure, it's smoother but 60hz for the usual windows and browsing stuff does the work. But if you are I can only recommend to switch to a 144hz. I made the change recently and it's an entirely new feeling. I wouldn't want to miss it.

The only time you ever even see 144hz is when things are actually being rendered at 144hz. This is pretty much limited to gaming, unless you count mouse movements, scrolling, and the like (which IMO look just fine at 60). Basically, a 144hz won't magically change the framerate of the 24hz movie you're watching, or anything like that. Unless you game, and even then it's only super important in response time games like FPS, I'd stick with a 60hz IPS panel.

You can get a korean monitor which OCs to 120hz and is IPS.

Wow my current monitor is bad

The S243HL achieved a brightness score of 217 candelas per square meter (cd/m2) and an incredibly low contrast ratio of 238:1.

After some reading on Dell U2414H I am really starting to like it. Thanks  Oshino Shinobu

The color is great, back-light is quite even, contrast is good, and the input lag is very low. Plus a good price. Much better then my current monitor.

As for 144Hz, I am raising a daughter, so don't have that much time for gaming and as far I read here, not really any point to go for other than games. 1440p is a bit pointless IMHO. Only use is gaming again. 4k is not really playable, while 1440p definitely  is, and looks quite nice with low AA.

Thanks for your replies and keep them coming! :)

What's your GPU. You can most likely not run games @ 4K

Yes it is.

It does not even say that my GPU supports 4K resolutions, are you sure?

support =/= can play games @ decent FPS.

You may be able to run the screen but games....forgot about those (except very old ones and /or graphically bad like tf2 or portal)

Here is a graph of tomb raider:

Your 7950 is about 8% worse than the lowest score, so about 23-25 fps, NOT PLAYABLE (except if you come from a console)

Oh I thought you were disagreeing with me, and stating that 4K is playable with 7950.

4K is still new enough that most cards that are a few years old don't specifically list support, even though it usually works fine. Note that it says D-sub (VGA) and DVI max resolution on that site. You'll need to use DisplayPort to get 60 Hz @ 3840x2160 anyway. A 4K monitor likely wouldn't even have a DVI input; if it did it would be strictly a legacy feature.

As explained above, the real issue is that the HD 7950 is not fast enough to achieve playable performance at 3840x2160 in most recent games or at nice detail settings. In fact, 1440p would be pushing it for that card in most games unless you drop settings quite low. Application/desktop usage at 4K would be fine, though.

  • 4 weeks later...

I guess since a lot of video is recorded in either 30 or 24 fps, 120 Hz is pretty much the sweet spot. So yes, it's only good for gaming.

I cannot be held responsible for any bad advice given.

I've no idea why the world is afraid of 3D-printed guns when clearly 3D-printed crossbows would be more practical for now.

My rig: The StealthRay. Plans for a newer, better version of its mufflers are already being made.

IMO 1440p is nice just because you have a lot more space on the desktop.  Less scrolling on web pages, more pages on word docs, larger areas in spreadsheets... everything.  4K gives you that to an even bigger degree, but it's kind of overkill since everything becomes so tiny it's difficult to use.

144Hz is definitely noticeable outside games, moving the mouse around, dragging around windows, and scrolling are all noticeably smoother.  It's a nice bonus if you have a 144Hz monitor, but it's not worth getting one just for that of course.  If you're not into FPS games, and a lot of it, it's not really worth it.

The U2414H is a great monitor, so unless you want to pay the extra for 1440p that's your best option, that monitor is pretty much best-in-class for 1080p.
