Whats the best disk defragmentation software?

orangecat

Personally I use UltimateDefrag 4 from Disktrix but is there a better option?

http://www.disktrix.com/index.php

Just a heads up their website sucks ass and isn't full of any really good information the software actually isn't bad though.

A programmer once told me that there's nothing wrong with using microsoft's default defragger. I personally use defraggler.

Ultimate defrag 4. Lots of cool options. I really like the feature where you can put the most often used files on the outermost part of the disk for increased read speeds though not much i think

I actually use that software all the time and have a very complex setup for my gaming HDDs and it works well but I want to know if there is better software out there with maybe more options.

Why are your hdd's getting so fragged? The O/S is where you get fragmentation all the time. That's on a ssd which you can't defrag.

Sir William of Orange: Corsair 230T - Rebel Orange, 4690K, GA-97X SOC, 16gb Dom Plats 1866C9,  2 MX100 256gb, Seagate 2tb Desktop, EVGA Supernova 750-G2, Be Quiet! Dark Rock 3, DK 9008 keyboard, Pioneer BR drive. Yeah, on board graphics - deal with it!

I use an alternative method for defrag'. idk if it's good for your situation but...

Given that Windows lays files down contiguously in any empty volume, plug your spare 2TB drive into a free SATA, copy one of your gaming 2TB drives to it, unplug the fragged one, it's your new spare (or somevariation of that, you get the picture).

It's quite quick as it's all disk-to-disk transfer. AFAIK,  defrag programs are designed to do their job with limited on space. We are no longer limited on space, the defrag progs are unnecessarily slow.

(and as others said, since Vista, Windows defrags in the BG - How are you measuring performance loss? I suppose if a particular game reads in a particular level you can tell if it's fragged badly or not... Could you put problem files on a dedicated drive and symlink to them? then you might have only, smaller, one drive to maintain. Or use a cheapo 40GB SD)

Gigabyte Z68AP-D3 | 2500k | 16GB Geil 1866 | Seasonic g360 | Windforce GTX660 | SSDs: 250GB 840 + 2x240GB m500 Striped | Spinners: 640GB 2.5" + 2x2TB Mirrored

QFR : TKStealth : Noctua : Abyssus : Nostromo : Dell & Asus screens on my Lavolta Triple

7 is my main OS + several VMs on my 500GB SSD Stripe

Back in the day you could get defragger software that would arrange your data by some predefined scheme like, Swap, OS, Programs, Data or you could change the order according to your preference. The hard disk drive tech has advanced so rapidly and for the better that trying to arrange your files/programs is a moot point, the only point is to have them be continuously on the disk so once you find it you pick it up on a continuous stream, where it is is irrelevant these days. Although you still have some people out there beating the drum that they want their data/programs here or there because they think its faster, ok maybe a pico second faster but in the end it is irrelevant as long as its a continuous file. Then, most of you have tiny files, big files are in the 10s of Gigabytes not mega bytes.

Just use the Windows defragger and save your money/time.

I roll with sigs off so I have no idea what you're advertising.
