Sli 780ti's or 780ti liquid cooled or 980?

ZachtheMan

I currently have a Gigabyte GTX 780Ti Windforce GHZ Edition and I have been planning on upgrading my system(pc part picker link: http://pcpartpicker.com/user/zachtheman/saved/Wd6NnQ) and I have been wanting to upgrade my graphics setup and cooling setup. I have looked into all of this very much and have determined that adding another 780ti would get me more performance now, but would also require a new PSU as I am using the shittiest power supply ever made, the Corsair GS800. My current 780ti performs most games at about 30-60 fps which is ok, however i want a steady framerate. My current gpu outputs TONS of heat into my room and heats it up over 5*F if my door is shut with light gaming. The big reason I have seriously considered the GTX 980 is that the heat output is much less, but what has worried me is the lower bandwidth memory bus as I need all the GPU memory I can get as 4k gaming eats it all up on my 3gb 780ti. I am wondering if I should keep my 780ti and water cool it or if I should get another (let me know if you think if i should get an sli if I should get another windforce or get a reference card) 780ti or get a single 980 that would be watercooled later and EXTREMELY overclocked. Pls give suggestions and/or if AMD has any cards I should look at also.

PS: my current 780ti crashes a lot in  games.

Thanks,

ZachtheMan

If you can push it, 295X2. However, water cooling seems like the best option for you right now.. And maybe add a second 780ti later on.. An on the other end a 980 has some new features and yes it has lower heat output, and ughghh "futureproofing".. It really depends on personal preference.

The real thing that truthfully has made me consider the GTX 980 ver the sli 780ti is the support for directx 12 which Hopefully (fingerscrossed) inproves 4k fps. Is there any way the 780ti can use directx 12 or would it have to be emulated?

Adding a second 780 Ti would make your heat problem worse.  Adding liquid cooling would do nothing to improve the heat in the room, but could allow for higher overclock (making the heat problem worse).  The only solution for more GPU power and lower heat output is the 980.  Alternatively, if you can suck it up for a while (perhaps winter weather will help?  open a window?) you should wait to see what AMD comes out with in a few months.

I'm assuming there will be some kind of patch for dx12 however I'm guessing the experience won't be as good as you would get on a more compatible 980

Watercooling will not improve your heat problems as CostcoSamples said and your Gigabyte GTX 780Ti Windforce GHZ probably wont overclock any better as well (considering i have the same at 1320MHz and the fan speed is at around 60% only, but that may also depend on your case and ambient temperature). The GTX 980 will help you with lover temps and also with higher clock speed (for example the ZOTAC AMP Extreme Edition which is 1393MHz boost out of the box).
