i7 4770k 4.1Ghz 1.3v

Hi guys,

has been a while now, but doubts get worse the more time i think of it...

My 4770k ocs to 4.1Ghz at 1.295v... (I've set the cache to 4.0Ghz at 1.25v, and vengeance ram 1640Mhz cas9, BCLK 102.5, maxzimus vi hero) and i keep seeing people going easily to 4.5, 4.7Ghz... Have i done sth wrong?

What i did in the bios was: set the AI oc tuner to manual, set the bclk to 102.5Mhz, cpu core ratio to 39, cache min 8 max 38, ram freq to 1640Mhz, extreme tweaking enabled, cas latency 9-9-9-24-2 (as vendor says), integrated fault manager disabled, cpu voltage adaptive 1.295v, cache voltage adaptive 1.25v, cpu spread spectrum disabled... Im using one screen on the gtx780, so cpu's graphics are not used...

Did i have bad luck and a bad chip or is sth else the problem? I've seen many ocing to 4.5Ghz at 1.3v...

Drop the BCLK to 100mhz (stock) and up the multiplier to 42, stress test. If its stable bump it up to 43/44 then stress test.

Silicon lottery. Also, those chips you're talking about are high for Haswell. You got a somewhat below average chip, but not a bad one.

I got my brothers 3570k to 4.7 at 1.295v i believe it was. But yea, you were just unlucky m8

There is a wide range on 4770k's.

 

Some people have to drop cache to get higher clocks. Even the 4790k is really only a 4.2ghz overclock on all cores and some can't get much higher without bumping up volts quite a bit.

 

Core>Cache>Memory.

 

Best way to OC is prob drop cache to 3.5 find max core. Then bump up cache and test with Aida 64 with just cache checked to find max cache. Then memory last. 

 

Also motherboard does not matter. You can have a premier motherboard (like you have) and get a 4-4.2, and you can have a dirt cheap z87 MSI like mine and get 4.5 on air. It is all about the chip on Haswell. If you got a low 4 chip, it is going to be a low 4 chip. You aren't doing anything wrong. Me and a friend bought our K's from the same place (Microcenter) with very close binning and mine went 4.5 on a evo 212, and his did 4.2 on water on a much more expensive motherboard. 

 

4770k's might be lower binned now due to the 4790k as well. Maybe not though. I know they are a little different, but I don't know if they can change that early in production. This happened with FX chips though. The old 8320/50's OC very high before the 9xxx's came out.

I actually don't have the money to upgrade, and i bought this chip this february...

What is the "max safe" voltage for cache?

start by dropping your bclk to stock and cache ratio to 35 (this won't affect performance) and concentrate on getting only the core voltage and frequencies dialed in right.
