Need quieter fans or other solution

KirbyTech

So I bought Fractal Silent Series R2 140mm fans about a month ago hoping to bring my temps down a bit. Start off with them at 12v then reduced to 5v I think with the included reducer. These fans are still so loud that at idle they are picked up from my mic when Skyping friends. Can I make these fans quieter or do I have to buy new fans? If I do need to buy new fans which 120mm ones would be good for airflow and watercooling as I will be doing a loop in the near future.

Yes those fans are pretty loud. . . They should be renamed to Fractal Not So Silent Series R2

Anyway I have the Corsair SPs now, although probably not the quietest fans on the market, or the cheapest, they are more silent than the Silent R2s

Price does not matter but I do not need top of the line fans as I am guessing they are over $30 CAD

On top of buying new fans you could also try using a program like speedfan to further reduce the speed at which the fans run at when idle.

I was looking at them but when I went to buy some they were out and the ones I got were on 60% off. Seems like it would have been better to wait.

Could I shut them off at idle with it?

Which ones would you say would be best? For under $30 each, as I feel even that is stupid expensive for a fan I'll replace in 5 years.

It has been a while since I've used it, but I'm pretty sure I was able to do that. The program is free so it's always worth a shot to see if it works out well for you.

You can try isolating them from the case with rubber mounts if that's the problem. bequiet silent wings 2 140 mm are great silent fans with a good noise characteristic.

To control the fans I'd use a fan curve in the motherboard BIOS, if your motherboard allows that. If not, you can get some simple fan controllers with 3 settings (5V, 7V and 12V) that go into one of your PCI slots. I think NZXT makes such a fan controller. The ultimate solution would be something like a Grid+ or a mCubed T-Balancer. But for now, i would concentrate on improving your fractal fans or changing them.

who cares...

I have them running at 5v on Phanteks fan hub.

Make sure the fans are plugged into your motherboard, not the psu.

That's decent.

I'd remove one fan and hold it in hand while running and compare it to a mounted one to make sure that the fan is loud and not the problem could not be solved with a rubber mount, before you order new ones.

Thanks, I'll see if that fixes it. Hope so since it would suck to buy more fans.

Are these fans for your CPU? or case fans?

On my cpu I just have the stock 140mm fans that came with my Phanteks PH-TC14PE, they are pretty damn quiet, but make some very slight whine from the motor, but otherwise very good.

For my case fans I picked up some Cougar Vortex PWM and so far they seem pretty damn good. Silent at lowest speed. They were $16 CDN (had $10 rebate) each from my local store, which is pretty damn good.

Expensive without rebate though. Local store doesn't stock Noctua fans so my choice was Cougar or Gelid.

Honestly Noctuas are GREAT. Pricey, but dead silent. Hella ugly though, and paying a premium pretty much just for them to be black is kinda lame.

Some guy on Reddit did a comparison between some good fans HERE if you wanna check it out.

These are case fans. The ones from Phanteks are great but I added these in the top.
