Pentium G3258 vs fx 6300

Hello,

I am looking at upgrading my cpu/ mobo to get some improvements for my gaming pc, and am looking at two of the highest rated budget cpu's: fx6300 for team red and Pentium anniversary addition. I will almost certainly be using the stock cooler as I live in Colorado and live in my cool basement, so there it a slim chance that heat will ever be a big factor. I currently have a 750ti and don't plan on upgrading for a while, as that is more than sufficient for my current games when not bottlenecked by my old ass Cpu and mobo.

Games: bf3, borderlands 2, Batman Arkham city, as well as any decent free game, and bf4 or bfh and pre sequel in the future.

I understand that bf4 really benefits from up to 4 cores, but I have heard really great things about the Pentium lately. Please help and thank you all very much.

Also, what are some good mobos that are real cheap but still work well for both sides?

You're looking at overclocking CPUs on both sides here, so I suggest going with a Z97 or a 990FX for either side... You'll also need to ditch the stock cooling if you want to squeeze out the true potential of the CPUs...

Edit: There are H97/B85 motherboards that allow limited overclocking...

If you go with the pentium you don't need anything more than the stock cooler but an evo 212 will keep it frosty.

The pentium would give you better performance in most games if you OC, and all you'll need is a Hyper 212 and you'll be good to go. There are H97 boards that allow for OCing, which reduces the cost of the platform.

However, the Triple-module (6 thread) 6300 is also overclockable, and good with the Hyper 212. It won't beat the pentium in many games now, but if you give it a few years, with games becoming more heavily threaded, or if you do any kind of video editing, the 6300 might pull out on top.

Personally, I'd get the Athlon X4 860k. It's a great budget CPU, and although it still won't beat the pentium, it's the same price and has 4 cores, with a slightly updated architecture from the 6300.

the fx 6300 has 6 true cores and 6 threads not 3 true cores and 6 threads

Its three Piledriver modules, which means six cores that share some resources. Not as much resource-sharing as, say, Hyperthreading. But as long as we're being technical, not six true cores.

They do have some resources that aren't shared, but some of the cache, and FPU are shared, which is why I said Triple-Module, not Triple-Core.

it's a grey area, and depends greatly on the task that you're performing.

They say people write what they cannot say. I cannot say what I am thinking by I will write that the Pentium beats the AMD when overclocked to 4.6-4.8ghz regardless of how many cores the FX 6300 has. I saw the Pentium on sale for $55. I always assumed people would use it for an HTPC instead of a gaming machine. I guess it would make sense as a LanParty machine to take to gaming competitions.

for a great budget solution get the Pentium and a MSI H81-P33. that's what i have, and i love it, overclocking is a breeze. :)

Get the Pentium.  It overclocks like a dream, and you have a clear upgrade path for the future.  AM3+ doesn't have an upgrade path.

The G3258 wont support 1.5V ram. So forget about a 1.5v Dual-Channel RAM kit. If you can upgrade the cooler, go with the AMD A8 and the MSI gaming mobo. New egg has some great packages for the AMD A8 and a new cooler. Plus, if you currently or decide to stream, the extra cores will be utilized. Hope I helped.

AMD is like throwing "NEW FX CPU'S WITH A LOWER TDP" on a dead socket.

2 = dual. The G3258 supports dual channel memory.

BF4/BFH will run better on a 6300. BL2/BL Presequal/BAC and ofc free to play games will run better on a G3258.

Hey guys!

It really comes down to price, in the UK the 6300 is still a contender in my opinion but Austin done a budget CPU video this week.

http://youtu.be/DVmIVSalP-s

That said I've got a custom PC mag that says that the 6300 still holds its own.

A decent 970 board will do no need for 990FX
