Free VPN Froot Too Good To Be True?

vikeyev

I recently jumped on the pirate bay only to notice they are advertising a VPN service FrootVPN on their front page. Having a look they seem WAY too good to be true, but it was on the TPB so I'm not sure.

The first thing that caught my eye was this:

No logs
We care about your internet privacy. None of our servers keep logs, no IP address log, no timestamp. Nothing! Even if the law enforencement would ask for logs we will not be able to provide anything

Reading through their FAQS:

Is FrootVPN free?

Yes Frootvpn is complete free! we dont charge you anything!

Do you keep logs?

We dont keep any logs of any kind. all we ask from you is your email address and username. and thats it. no other information is keept in our system.

Where are you servers located?

Our servers is located in Sweden and we operate under Swedish law which offer high internet privacy law for your safety

Do you have any bandwidth limitation?

There is no bandwidth limitation our servers are connect to 10Gbit backbone and you use full speed in our network.

Do you keep ANY logs which would allow you or a 3rd party to match an IP-address and a time stamp to a user of your service?

We do not maintain any VPN logs or data logs on our servers. all of IP addresses are dynamic and you will receive a new one everytime you connect and there is no timestamp or logs of which ip address you receive. Which will make it impossible for any 3rd parties or our staff to tell what ip address you got asigned.

I'm not sure what to make of this. If it is all true than this is amazing, but I'm a little scared to give it a try. I know it was advertised on TPB and all, but still.
What do you guys think? Anybody here used it before, or planning on giving it a try? Let me know how it goes.

Hmm, I just came across it too. I'm also wondering whether it's good or nah.

Their FB page doesn't inspire much confidence.

No, I meant the PirateBay stuff and pirating. Not the VPN.

Guys, the topic is about a VPN, not pirating. This isn't hard.

I have seen this "no logs kept" "we do not track" "completely anonymous"  all before

But can they ensure it is 100%? that nowhere is a record kept or stored even for a second

I never said a VPN did. But I guess I assumed wrong about using TPB.

To the OP. The website looks pretty decent, and it's supposedly secure "https". Try Googling it and see if you find any user reviews.

It sounds great, and it's hosted in Sweden (where I buy all my VPNs from) so it seems like it should be fine.

I'll make a new VM tonight and try it out. If you found it on TBP then it's likely that its merged with a RAT/Malware, so I'd proceed with caution if you're considering downloading it.

Honestly OP I'd just buy something like nVPN if you're worried about this one. You can choose between Dynamic/Static IP's, and you can choose what country you're servers are hosted in. Just don't choose America if you don't want them to keep logs. Every VPN service in the US is required by law to keep logs.

You sure about that? I am fairly sure that it is Europe that has data retention laws, not the US.

Unlike Europe with its draconian Data Retention Directive, the United States does not have a mandatory data retention law. However, if an ISP or VPN provider does retain any data relating to its customers (i.e. it keeps logs) then according to the Stored Communications Act it is required to hand these over on receipt of a court order from a law enforcement agency. In addition to this, if investigators or prosecutors are able to identify an individual, they can require a VPN company to keep records of that individual’s on-line activity, credit card payments etc. for a limited amount of time (90 days, renewable for another 90 days).

https://www.bestvpn.com/blog/5539/data-retention-and-vpn-logging-in-the-united-states/

Currently the US does not have any blanket law compelling ISPs to retain customer data, like the EU does. But US ISPs are required to hand over any data they have on customers, including address, credit card information and logs of what websites you’ve been visiting, if they are legally obliged via a court order from US law-enforcement

There is nothing to confirm that FrootVPN is legit, but based on their twitter feed, I can suspect that this is indeed a scam. (https://twitter.com/search?f=realtime&q=frootvpn&src=typd)

An interview was held with the providers of FrootVGN 3 days ago, but this doesn't give off too much credibility either. But what is interesting is that someone in the comment section already claimed to be DDOS. (http://freedomhacker.net/interview-with-frootvpn-provider/)

So yea it's bit too good to be true. As for TPB, I suggest keeping off of it for the time being.

WELCOME TO THE BOTNET

I don't really like using free VPNs.  I'm happy with PrivateInternetAccess, so I have no need to switch.

Their website looks really nice though, so I'll give them that.

Buy and year of PIA and you are all set!

This.  Best purchase I've made in a while.

I don't use their VPN client though, OpenVPN uses much less memory and is more lightweight in general.

why worried about logs when the service isn't even reliable?

also, it's no longer free (because i never able to connect with free service they provide), and they already make PREMIUM plan

anyway... if you think all VPN provider is safe, think again... if law required their data to find someone from their database do you think they can say no?

Quick bump for this, since in the last year there have been some improvements made to the best free VPNs out there, in my opinion.

I definitely still agree with the majority opinion in this thread though -- you can't beat a paid VPN. Found this fresh list of free VPNs though, which might be useful to the super frugal: http://fried.com/vpn/best-free-vpn/

I personally prefer a paid VPN and have found free one's to be a little too unreliable.

This...

"We don't keep any logs of any kind. All we ask from you is your email address and username and thats it. No other information is kept in our system."

Makes it a bit uhh... bit sketchy in my opinion, I don't really trust free VPNs, even if they say they don't keep logs. I just can't trust them 100%, sorry I think I'm being too paranoid.

If I have to choose free VPN, I'd go with the one that doesn't require login, so I don't have to put username or email.

But, I prefer paid VPN.
