Suprise! Pangu releases IOS 8-8.1 Jailbreak way ahead of time. [UPDATE 7 @Saurik] 10/25

Chinese development team, Pangu came out with a Jailbreak tool way ahead of time. This contrast with previous outlooks of a long wait. As you can see, the tool is not perfect and most likely will require a major patch or two before some of the major bugs are fixed. On a good note, this is the fastest jailbreak in history to this date.

PanGu iOS 8 Jailbreak Tool(pangu.io)

Preparations for jailbreak.

Backup before using pangu jailbreak tool. Although this tool is tested successfully on most devices, we still hope you backup your data to avoid data loss. Please turn off the screen password lock and close the "find my iPhone" feature in the iCloud settings before jailbreak.

the firmware upgraded via OTA may cause failure.

The firmware upgraded via OTA will have a lot of influence factors. If you have several failed attempts, Please try to download the latest firmware and restore your iOS devices. In addition, Pangu (iOS 8) tool now add a function to restore iOS devices and execute automatic activation, you can try click the jailbreak button after restoring, and Pangu will automatically activate your device and do jailbreak.

"Storage capacity is almost full."?

This is because the jailbreak program will write important files into the system directory and cause alarm, it will not affect the result. When the Cydia be compatible, click on the Cydia will launch the directory moving process.

About afc2?

Because Apple made a lot of adjustments to the system, you cannot use afc2 plug-ins at present.

Do not delete "com.apple.mobile.softwareupdated.plist"

Do not delete "com.apple.mobile.softwareupdated.plist", otherwise it will cause system failure.

Processing method of jailbreak failure

Please enable the Airplane mode and close Wifi and then try to jailbreak, or if not successful, please restart your devices and then try. If it still fails, please use the Pangu restore function and jailbreak again.

It seems that this release currently is for developers, missing cydia and only coming with ssh. Expect an update soon.

Update - Pangu 1.0.0 disabled for bug fixes

Current Pangu Jailbreak v1.0.0 is disabled remotely because we are fixing bug which may cause lost of your photos. Please wait ...

- Pangu's Twitter

Update 2 - Pangu 1.0.1 released

So Pangu v1.0.1 is out at dl.pangu.25pp.com/jb/Pangu8_v1.0… which fix some bugs. It's for Windows and Chinese language only.

- Pangu's Twitter

*Update 3 - Cydia updated to ios 8

(edit: ~7:30AM PT) I've given a new version of Cydia Installer in the form of a standard jailbreak bootstrap for inclusion in a new version of their jailbreak. I've also pushed the .deb of the iOS 8 version of Cydia to apt.saurik.com for manual download, but not yet to my repository. A lot of thanks goes out to limneos, who tested the new build for me, as I was at an airport (and now am frantically typing this message while they figure out how to retract the jetbridge from the plane I'm on that is about to take off).

Update 4 - Limited Cydia Substrate

Important Limitations on iOS 8

In short, on iOS 8: after every reboot, you need to respring before Substrate will load extensions in SpringBoard.

Substrate version 0.9.5013 supports iOS 8, but because of limitations in Pangu (versions 1.0 through 1.0.1 so far tested), Substrate won't work immediately after the device boots - it will only work after the first respring. You can respring by SSHing to your device and typing killall backboardd

This happens because Pangu loads Substrate after other processes have already loaded, causing Substrate to not work until the next time backboardd and SpringBoard restart.

We are coordinating closely with the Pangu team to make certain the best possible fix for this is deployed.

Update 5: AFC2 has been updated

Update 6 - @PanguTeam

We are working with @saurik to make Cydia stable asap. Also we are fixing bugs include Safari and iMessage problems. Please wait ...

Update 7 - Saurik Bug fixes

We have definitely been working together, with lots of e-mails back and forth. I explained to them what was wrong with Substrate on boot, and they mostly fixed it; what was still not working I ended up sending them a patch to fix (after asking them for the source code to that tiny part of the untether). We have Substrate working really well now, as far as I can tell.

I have been working on the passcode issues (which were somewhat deeper than just "stashing", as tons of important files in /var were also ending up with the wrong data protection class) and have now finished fixing that (in a way that should upgrade anyone already using Cydia to a state where a passcode should be safe again just by installing the new Cydia package).

There are, however, a couple more key issues I need to fix in Cydia (such as the user's language setting being ignored). There are also some other unrelated issues in the untether that I forwarded to Pangu on behalf of some extension developers, which they have already fixed (but now need to be tested). I don't know much about the problems Pangu is working on.

WARNING : It is currently suggested that non-developer users NOT jailbreak right now and wait until some bugs are fixed.

Very nice. For me and a lot of people, the point of buying an apple device is to have it jailbroken.

Trust me man. You don't know what your missing yet. I encourage you to look at some of the tweaks that currently exist. We also might get full NFC capability.

Jailbroken for 4 years on all iDevices I've owned. Can't go back to stock.

I see the point, but I don't see why they wouldn't just buy an android. From my experience, jailbroken apps are (mostly) pretty poorly written and cause issues. I haven't jailbroken an iphone since the 4 so I may be missing the point these days.

I actually am switching to android. Apps are not poorly written as of lately. We have a lot more feedback between users and developers than we used to. Also payments through cydia kinda come with a certain standard

Is this tethered?

As @ShadowCaptain says, I don't feel like I'm missing anything either. I had my iPhone jailbroken through iOS 7, but now that the jailbreak is gone because of the iOS 8 update, I noticed that the features you get aren't even that great from jailbreaking.

While I'm sure you and I would, Jailbreaking kind of has a pro over android. The community has far more contact with individual developers. A smaller community and readily feedback allows us to easier request things from developers.

Some tweaks I use

Bioprotect - Lock individual apps of choice with finger prints.

Virtual home. - simply place your finger on the home button as opposed to pressing it. This really helps prevent the breaking or wearing out of physical buttons.

Winterboard - Theming engine made by the god himself

IWidgets - Allows user submitted widgets to be placed and moved around the Homescreen.

F.Lux - Brings f. lux to your iDevice

Multi icon mover - move multiple icons at once

Mxtube - download YouTube videos

Data meter - data usage tracker allowing limits, warnings, and resets. All placed in your notification center.

Callbar - don't get interrupted by calls. Call bar replaces the incoming call screen with a semi transparent bar on the upper half.

Forecast - display weather on lockscreen

TetherME - enables tethering on all devices.

If you don't need that customizability, maybe Jailbreaking isn't for you.

Yeah that's why I don't like android, too much faffing around customizing things, widgets etc

I like iOS because I can just buy a phone, turn it on, sign in, and everything is there as it should be, it works, it does its job, I dont need my phone to be a complicated PC,

I appreciate people like that, and enjoy tinkering, but I will never understand why

Yep...couldn't imagine using an I-Thingy minus the jailbreak. The kinda-more-than stock sec features and slight O.C.+ a few other key apps have extended this I-Thingy 5 way past its dirtnap.

Essentials IMHO:

Firewall /w port/header control+built in Whois

diskpie

udid-faker

Location Faker

Speed-Boost

Speed Intensifier

Browser Changer

Screen Clip

Bridge

Everything downloader

Signal 2/Cell Tower info

Live Screen (mp4/mov) recorder

ifile

read any text format thingy

Torrents

Ability to use/import any song/video into eye-tunes

TV-out (all apps)

Everything anyone should be able to do with a 700$ gadget they payed for

Midi-Everything

Adjust dB(z) output strength of wi-fi transmit/receive

Activator

By-Pass goofy apple mail-FaceTime-twitter-vimeo "baked in" API/SDK crap

Bake Lasagna/Grill tacos

Plug in any PC USB keyboard, use other non-appl USB devices (like microphones)

Take control of ur own public/private keys, use openvpn over proxy

Blah blahs

This iPhone five was going to be my last less than dumb phone. Not so hip on ze phone taking my vitals.

The firewall shows every port (trying) being accessed. It's a nightmare and nooooo, I'm not talking analytics. Egads.

Question: how's android compared to a well-jail broken I-thing re: having the capability to see where that CC# is headed?

I became a bit weary after receiving a 60k tab courtesy of the irs. It wasn't phone related, some putz "dug" my trash can.

Fortunately, the person(s) involved were busted.

Buuuut, aside from the sec stuff, there's a lot of handy-dandy things, mostly music related a jb'd iPhone can do well.
