Any tips and tricks for external HDD attached to a router

FIXXX

Hello!

Will be getting this router tomorrow
ASUS RT-N18U

And will attach this clunker of an External HDD to it through the USB 3.0 port.

A-Data NH03 1.5TB

What smart stuff can I do with this setup besides the basic "access through the browser and copy to another device"?

Perhaps some sort of a small additional device to act as a server so I could make a cloud or something?

I need the router primarily for the Gigabit transfer speed as my ISP's Mikrotik router can only provide 300 megabits as is - and 1 gbits in bridge mode. But that is besides the point.

I will of course eventually get a standalone NAS, this seems to me like the most rational home upgrade besides a 21:9 monitor and a larger internal SSD.
