CPU Decision Time

Go to solution Solved by Zade_95,

Alright, I think I'll go Xeon. Cheers for the feedback guys!

Need to choose what CPU I'm gonna pick up for a new PC. It's going to be used for film editing, photo editing, general use and very light gaming (The Sims etc :P)

Tossing up between a FX8320 (For the cores), an i5 4xxx (Good allround), a Xeon E3-1231v3 (Cheaper than i7), or a i7 4790something (For the power).

Budget is an issue!

Thoughts?

Sounds like you need a 4790K. For the video editing. Depends on how intensive.

If not very, 4690K.

I would go for the Xeon, since it has the power of a 4790K at the price of a 4690K. But if budget is an issue, I've heard that the FX-8320 is no slouch for editing and rendering. P.S. Beware of a user "Krytopsy", I would ignore his posts. He tends to be a bit biased.

Xeon if you're using a dedicated GPU. More threads always help with rendering if that's what you're doing most.

i5 for strictly gaming

Main: i7 2600 | ASUS P8Z68-V | 2x4GB Vengeance 1600 | GTX 580 | WD Blue 1TB | Antec TP-650C | NH U12S | W7 x64

Backup: X6 1090T | MSI K9A2 Platinum | 4x2GB XMS2 800 | GTX 550Ti | WD Blue 1TB |  Antec VP-450 | CM TX3 | W7 x64

Avoid AMD like the plague. Waste of money. Cheap = Bad. Always. This case is no difference. You get what you pay.  Get the newest, best, most expensive i5 or i7 you can get. Call it a day.

For your specific needs, a Xeon will do you well.  If you have the money and really want to cut down on time spend editing/rendering, look into X99 and a i7-5820k.  This is a very expensive route though.
