Question on the logistics of a triple screen setup

I'm in the planning process of upgrading my gaming rig and have decided that I want to upgrade from 1 to 3 27" monitors.

Is it possible for the center monitor to be either 2.5k or 4k while the left and right monitors are a lower recommended resolution (1080p)? I figure the L and R ones will mostly be in my peripheral vision so I won't need the cutting edge quality that 2.5 or 4K offer (plus they're cheaper). Similarly, can the refresh rates/ response time/ anything else differ between the 3? Also, if the above situation can work, would my graphics card(s) be outputting the maximum resolution (ie 4K) data to all 3 monitors but the outer 2 would not be able to display this, therefore wasting GPU output, or can the GPU control what quality data is sent to individual monitors and not waste processing power? Sorry for the long winded questions!

TL;DR In a triple screen setup for gaming, do all 3 monitors need to be identical?

Thanks

Eyefinity has the ability to take multi resolutions, unsure about Nvidia Surround though.
