Data Circuit-terminating Equipment VS Data Terminal Equipment?

My coursework requires me to explain the difference between DTE's and DCE's. I read the Wikipedia pages for both and understood the role of a DTE. DCE's, however, have gone over my head entirely.

 

I'd really like someone to either point me towards or gives me a good explanation of what the difference between Data Circuit-terminating Equipment, Data Terminal Equipment, and Data Transmission Equipment is.

The DCE provides a clock rate for the interface. The DTE is the receiving end.
