Confession of a FPS junkie.

killcomic

Frames per second. We cheer when we get plenty of it and dismay when we don't get enough.

I have to admit that I am a recovering FPS junkie. I noticed that I would spend more time paying attention to the FPS counter at the corner of the screen rather than playing the game.

I consider 30 FPS as the bare minimum for enjoyable gameplay and would absolutely panic if it dropped below it (and don't start with 60 FPS bare minimum for Gabe's sake. We used to play the original Doom at 18 FPS and it rocked!).

Heck, I would even start hyperventilating if the frame rate dropped below 45.

Then it occurred to me, how much did my gaming experience actually suffer if I wasn't actually looking at the counter?

You know what? As long as it's not running a slide show, it's just fine. If anything, now I play games for enjoyment rather than using them as benchmarks.

Next, I'll learn to live with toned down quality settings.

Meh as long as the game runs smooth its ok, for an FPS I really do not enjoy 30fps

but I was playing assasins creed black flag on medium at 30fps on my laptop when on holiday and it was fine, I still play console, and I still have low powered machines that cannot handle 120fps 4k every second

Its still all about the games

That said I prefer my games to run at 1440p 60hz where possible for best 100% enjoyment

Some games make it look pretty smooth even with 30 fps.

I think it's a matter between game engines.

when you play a lot of games at 60+ FPS, 30 stops looking smooth. I can tell when the framerate drops from 60 without even looking at my fraps counter. 30 actually looks pretty choppy to me now. 30 looks like 20 and a year ago I couldn't tell the difference between 30 and 60.

There are some pretty decent games that can run at 30 fps but I think it seems better for consoles than it does on pc. Am I mistaken or do that pack some voodoo fairy dust into consoles to make 30fps better?

Not to many console potatoes.

For them, 30 fps is the maximum.

Like others have said, it pretty much differs game to game for me. There are some games (project zomboid, Far Cry 3, DayZ.) that I play at sub-30fps because I just didn't notice it. But others (Assassins Creed Botherhood, CS:GO, Grid 2) that I absolutely need to play at over 60fps or it bothers me. It's all a smoothness thing, and some engines handle frame rates different than others.

I'm that guy with the GPD Win.

I remember this. When I got my GTX 660, I was more focused on how it performs rather than enjoying the game.

Now I got like 18 FPS in CS:GO and I can't even enjoy both benchmarking and gaming

You can bark like a dog, but that won't make you a dog.

You can act like someone you're not, but that won't change who you are.

Finished Crysis without a discrete GPU,15 FPS average, and a lot of heart

How I plan my builds -

Spoiler

For me I start with the "There's no way I'm not gonna spend $1,000 on a system."

Followed by the "Wow I need to buy the OS for a $100!?"

Then "Let's start with the 'best budget GPU' and 'best budget CPU' that actually fits what I think is my budget."

Realizing my budget is a lot less, I work my way to "I think these new games will run on a cheap ass CPU."

Then end with "The new parts launching next year is probably gonna be better and faster for the same price so I'll just buy next year."

No, 30 FPS is 30 FPS. The game engine would have little to no effect of how smooth it looks.. But the different game scenes do change how it looks.. Straight edges make spotting low FPS really easy..

Depends on if I'm using a controller or keyboard and mouse. If mouse than it must be 60fps, if controller then 30fps can be playable.

60fps is fine for 60hz screens. Though if you own a 144hz panel i aim for 100+ I freaking hate playing game at 30fps because i can the feel and see the differences

I consider 30 FPS to be unplayable. I actually start feeling sick at 40-45. The high amount of blur that comes from low frames just leaves me queezy and no longer wanting to play. Especially in games like DayZ where the graphics don't really help as they are muddy and blurry too, only adding to me feeling sick.

60 FPS is my minimum as it is there I feel like I am somewhat ok. But even then, I aim for as high an FPS count as possible. CS:GO is capped at 300 and it is a breeze to get it to that cap.

What you personally find enjoyable is a matter of personal preference and personal sensitivity. I can tell (though I'm not necessarily terribly bothered) as soon as I drop to 50-55 in many games.

Its not really a question of whether or not a game is still enjoyable at lower framerates, the better question is why the framerate should ever be artificially capped on PC without supported and user-accessible options. The game should perform in accordance with the capabilities of your hardware. That was true with Doom 20 years ago and its still true today.

Depends on the game in my opinion. First person shooters require good frame rate to be able to change view very quickly. I played the recent Tomb Raider the other day and 40fps average was perfect. That was max settings bar TressFX at 2560x1440p. 30fps average with TressFX was easily noticeable but playable. Not worth it though. Stuck with 40 and no hair.
