I wish Google was as strict about mandating things like this so the industry can go forward ):  Anyone know if the K1 on the Nexus 9 is 64-bit?  Not too knowledgeable about Tegras :D

yea i wish google was a little strict too but i do still enjoy the freedom of downloading 4 other app stores to get my apps from. i dont think the k1 is 64 bit (though can be wrong) but hopefully the k2 is. and whats the point of 64bit if apple, or other manufacturers wont upgrade their ram and other things in order to fully utilize it.

Space Journal #1: So Apparently i  was dropped on the moon like i'm a mars rover, in a matter of hours i have found the transformers on the dark side of the moon. Turns out its not that dark since dem robots are filled with lights, i waved hi to the Russians on the space station, turns out all those stories about space finding humans instead of the other way around is true(soviet Russia joke). They threw me some Heineken beer and I've been sitting staring at the people of this forum and earth since.

Google can't solely due to the wide range of devices (Going back to a few years ago, mind you) that they or the Android Phone manufacturers are currently supporting.

Apple can do it because it's easy for them to make everyone focus on their new Tablets and Phones.

I still think that going 64bit on mobile is pointless...

Biggest reason is being able to port desktop versions of apps much easier. Trine 2 was able to be ported to the shield tablet fairly easily thanks to the K1 being 64-bit. Mobile games pretty much suck atm, and the only thing that's going to change that is 64-bit chips/better integrated graphics.

Then there's people like you that think the only benefit is more ram. Even in computers that have 4gb of ram there is a difference.

The point is that by the time apps DO need 64-Bit, the userbase is ready for it rather than announce 64 bit SoC's at the same time as 64 bit apps.

We're talking ARM_64 here right?

Not much that I can notice no... (My eMachines D732Z has 4GB RAM and a 64bit OS..) If anything, the background processes got bulkier...

are you referring to apple or android?  that is a good point i didnt really look at it that way. we have been used to just getting this..this and that as soon as this new thing is released.

The K1 is a 64-bit processor.

Anyways, this is interesting, but not necessarily surprising. They have to push 64-bit somehow, and this is definitely a good way of doing so.

Not for nothing, but Apple does not fuck around when they want to push something

Well some. Part of the chain has to make the switch at some point and at least they are pushing it. It might not have any benefits but it certainly has no downsides either and it means that we won't be held back buy 32 bit when the time comes that we hit that memory usage mark

Desktop -  i5 4670k, GTX 770, Maximums VI Hero, 2X Kingston Hyper X 3k in raid zero.

Laptop - Lenovo X230 Intel 535 480GB, 16GB Gskill memory, Classic Keyboard Mod, Triple USB 3.0 Express Card.

Yes.

It's better this happens now then later. Now we'll have a full library of 64-bit apps when the iPhone with 8GB of RAM comes out...

Seeing the requirements of current mobile aps right now, that day might be a long time away...

Without it you can only ever have 4 GB of RAM and I believe 80GB of Hard Drive, and that's with Intel's proprietary memory extensions in 32-bit mode.

storage isn't dependant on 32/64bit size

Good job, Apple. You're doing it right.

Memory is getting denser and more low-powered all the time. Once we can fit 8GB on a phone effectively, some manufacturer will push it out the door. It'll be nice if our SoCs are 64-bit by then, because devs won't have to worry about app compatibility.

We always push for more memory, more GPU, more CPU. Those needs always go up with time, and moving to full 64-bit is a step towards making those needs achievable.

I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason and intellect has intended us to forgo their use, and by some other means to give us knowledge which we can attain by them. - Galileo Galilei
