Indie Dev Threatens Gabe Newell, Has Game Removed From Steam

Fulgrim

If you're a developer selling a game on Steam, it's probably not the best idea in the world to tweet a death threat to the guy who owns Steam.

That's what indie developer Mike Maulbeck did earlier today, though, and it's now something he probably regrets.

The day should have started off pretty well! Maulbeck's game, Paranautical Activity, was included as part of a Steam store section highlighting Halloween-themed games.

Only, it was listed as an Early Access title, not a final product (the game had been only recently completed). That mistake sent Maulbeck into a Twitter tirade.

Things took a real nasty turn, though, when Mike - as Player Attack point out, not helped by his Halloween Twitter username being "Murderbeck" - tweeted the following.

He soon deleted the tweet, but despite his later regrets - Maulbeck tells Polygon " I didn't mean what I said" - the damage had been done (and the screencaps had been made).

"We have removed the game's sales page and ceased relations with the developer after he threatened to kill one of our employees", a Valve spokesperson told Kotaku. Which only made Mike's day/life worse.

If there's a lesson to be learned from all of this, it's...OK, no, I don't really need to spell it out.

Death threats aren't funny or appropriate or something you say in anger.  Ever.  It doesn't matter if "he didn't mean it".

-snip-

i'm not sure who to support on this on one end you game this game spitting shit a valve because of a mistake that could be solved whit time but on the other valve pulled down his game because of literally empty threats (if he actually really meant it well fuck) which IMO is an overkill punishment, i'm not suggesting that valve should ignore his behavior but again that's freaking overkill

I'd say the guy needs to learn that people work hard at stuff all the time, to have it all fail. It's part of life, and airing your frustrations on twitter like he did is unprofessional, and will get you fired/banned/dropped very quickly.

If I was to post on facebook/twitter that I wanted to kill my boss, I'm pretty sure I would get fired. Gabe isn't his boss, but his company has a professional relationship with him. So when you act unprofessional, you should expect that relationship to end.

HOW DARE HE THREATEN OUR ONE TRUE LORD AND MASTER!?!?!?!?!?

Praise be to GabeN!

All hail the glorious, kind, intelligent, and rotund Gabe Newell, inventor of the beautiful Steam.

GabeN is love. GabeN is life.

P.S. I love trolling. It's fun. But GabeN is still pretty cool.

Exactly. We need more "no tolerance" policies from internet companies. Send the message that, no, death threats are inexcusable, even if you "don't mean it." Threatening to kill somebody should not be taken lightly and never used in such an off-handed way. I'm totally with Valve on this one.

I understand his frustration and can overlook his first rant, but the guy went way too far afterwards and just kept digging his own grave.

Maybe this is a stunt to draw more attention. I'm not interested.

I have since obviously replied to them saying that I didn't mean what I said and pleaded that they consider the monopoly they have on the PC market before totally writing us off, but let's be real. If they took the game off the store, they're fuckin sure about their decision. There's probably nothing to be done.

-Mike Maulbeck

he should of considered the "monopoly" valve had before sending death threats to a valve employee, especially since it is GabeN.

if he had a problem with valve misrepresenting his game then privately talk to valve about instead of going on twitter and ranting about it like child.
