SSD or HDD?

sliferkiller

I'm looking to upgrade my pc with more storage so i have a few options..

1) SSD (120-258gb looking to spend roughly $100-150) and 500gb hard drive (already have)

2) SSD (same as above) + 1tb WD black drive

3) 1 tb black drive + 500gb seagate drive (already have)

Which option do you think will work the best for a gamer? I'm planning to run windows 7, have sata3 mobo.

Games i play:

Counterstrike GO

battlefield 3, maybe 4 in the future or new releases

minecraft

GTA 4, will get 5 as well

assetto corsa

a bunch of other medium- small games on steam

Might have a few programs like photo shop and video editting for the odd project from school..

What do you guys think will be a good set up?

definiteley get a SSD. If storage is almost full now, I'd get a 1 TB WD green in addition to your current HDD. WD blacks are mostly a waste of moneyif your operating system is on a SSD already.

Since you already have a 500GB then definitely #1.

I was in your exact situation with a 500 GB drive. 1 SSD and WD Black is what I got, you should be more than happy with that setup, trust me. I can turn off my computer at night without having to moarn about having to wait so long for it to load up in the morning!

P.S. WD Black should be a pretty good upgrade from your 500 GB in itself.

My PC: i7 3770k @ 4.4 Ghz || Hyper 212 Evo || Intel Extreme Motherboard DZ77GA || EVGA Hybrid 980ti || Corsair Vengeance Blue 16GB || Samsung 840 Evo 120 GB || WD Black 1TB

Peripherals: Corsair K70 RGB || Sentey Pro Revolution Gaming Mouse || Beyerdynamic DT 990 Premium 250 Ohm Headphone || Benq XL2420Z Monitor

SSD+ 1tb WD black drive

So the WD black drives speed wont benefit me much if i have a say.. 240 gb ssd with my os? Which SSD should i get in term of spending $100-150? I can wait until boxing day, or when a big sale comes up since i can still live with little room.

And i can add another seagate drive down the line or replace it

So another question is what SSD should i get?

Well you could really just get another 500 gb hdd and a 240+ ssd, instead of replacing your 500 for the 1tb, you can just add 500 and have a total of 1tb, plus .25tb of ssd space.

yesterday's weirdness is tomorrow's reason why

For the SSD I would go with 250gb Crucial mx100 for the OS and a couple games, and Western Digital 1tb Blue and your 500gb seagate for everything else.

If money isn't a problem then get the Crucial m550, if you're on a budget then go with mx100

The 840 EVO is nice, but I would hold off on buying one for a couple months and see if the firmware problem is really fixed.

Alrighty guys, I'll look for the Samsung 840 EVO first when its boxing day, or the M550.. (kinda a samsung fanboy)

The problem is the 840 EVO has the firmware bug that causes degradation to older files which leads to slower read speeds. This was supposed to be fixed in an update, be we won't truly know if it's fixed for a couple of month's.
