I personally use AVAST at home, but I also recommend Kaspersky for Paid antivirus protection.

In addition to those, I recommend also always using MalwareBytes as an "occasional" manual scanning tool.

If you're running Windows 8.x, then Windows Defender is also not too bad (when used with MalwareBytes), but according to independent testing, it usually doesn't do as well as AVAST, Kaspersky, and so forth.

Naw AVG is decent.

Personally I run Microsoft Security Essentials and run Maleware Bytes every once in a while.

Eh, I'd call AVG more bloatware then "decent". It has an alright detection rate, but I find that it bugs you constantly to upgrade and the interface is very spammy with buttons that will prompt you to upgrade (Showing you features that your version doesn't have, but will "unlock" if you pay to upgrade, etc). AVG still works, but I personally find there are much better free alternatives.

Out of the free ones, I much prefer AVAST.

Not true at all. Common sense won't help you from a compromised legitimate site. Nor from an exploit in Java or Flash. Nor from infected ad banners (even ones on legit sites).

There are MANY ways to get infected, even if you never once visit the dark side of the web.

I use MS security essentials with a daily scan, and malwarebytes usually with a scan on the weekend. It does the job, has detected a virus or two and suits me fine.

I don't use AVG because after the first time I did a scan, it decided that it was a virus itself and set about deleting the whole of AVG. That kind of made me realise it isn't very good. Plus my computer was completely unusable when it was scanning as it used so many resources, which I couldn't change unless I "upgraded" to the paid version.

You can't just rely on those security programs to protect your computer. Some common sense will help a long way as no matter how many security programs you have installed, once letting a malicious program into your system, then all of security programs you have installed are just as useless.

I have MalwareBytes Premium, MalwareBytes Antiexploit, and Windows Defender, on top of that I still use common sense when browsing the web.

Certainly, common sense IN CONJUNCTION with other security/virus/malware protection software, is of course the way to go. But that's not what your post above said. If a user read that and I never commented on it, they would never have known that you use all those other security programs. It was very misleading. I simply dislike it when people make the "lol common sense is all the Antivirus you need" joke, because it's simply not true anymore.

And of course, once your computer gets infected, it's a whole 'nother ball game. But all those security programs are there to prevent infection in the first place, or at the very least notify you immediately if you do become infected.

Personally I prefer Win 7 Anti-Virus 2012. Not as up to date as some of these other programs but who cares? It only cost $299 for a lifetime license. BEST DEAL!

SERIOUSLY SPEAKING THOUGH

Malwarebytes & Microsoft Security Essentials work wonders for my own personal computers and the family PC.

Oh and let's not forget about Common Sense.
