Help-A-Noob

Brand new to the community here.  Apologies if this is on the wrong forum; if you'd be so kind as to direct me to the right forum for this post I'd appreciate it.

I am in need of a new laptop and/or desktop, but I have absolutely no idea where to start, (computer noob) Here's the breakdown of my computer usage:
PowerPoint, Excel, Word, 8+ Firefox tabs all running at once, (business-y things.)
*lots* of heavy streaming...HD videos, FLAC music, etc...need me my fast internet.
    - Those need to be on a laptop for portability.
Music writing/recording w/ MIDI, (avid's ProTools)
Gaming, (really into stuff like Sleeping Dogs, GTA).  I don't have time to game much so don't need anything cutting edge here.

I'd love to have it all in just a laptop, if such a beast exists.  But, reality is I don't need the gaming or music writing to be portable, so if it'd be better to get a laptop/desktop combo I'll do what I need to do.  What kind of CPU, GPU, hard drive, etc. should I be looking for?  Any and all advice is appreciated!!

Would love to stay under 2 grand total...close to the 1 grand area would be nice.  But, as mentioned, I'm a total novice here so I have no idea how realistic that is.  If I could get all I need for $500, sweet.  But if what I *need* is gonna put me back at least 2500, then I'll have to really save up cause I gotta do what I gotta do, ya know.

Lenovo Y50

I'm getting this but not the 4K version soon :3

http://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-15-6-Inch-Gaming-Laptop-59425944/dp/B00K6ZIMPE/ref=psdc1_t1_B00K6ZIO2K_B00K6ZIMPE

The only thing I'm worried about is battery life xD

Also I won't be doing too much gaming on this, more Video Editing :) Oh and some midi work as well :D

But then again like yeah.... If you don't want to do heavy things on something just get a cheapish ultrabook and you should be fine for word, powerpoint, excel, firefox etc...

Or you could go for an expensive ultrabook like this

http://www.amazon.com/Dell-Computer-XPS13ULT-4286sLV-13-3-Inch-Laptop/dp/B00FZJF7JU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1413766931&sr=8-1&keywords=dell+xps+13

or a cheapy one like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Acer-S3-391-6046-13-3-Inch-Ultrabook-Windows/dp/B00AH4A950/ref=sr_1_2?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1413766962&sr=1-2&keywords=ultrabook

Welcome to the community! I also recommend the Y50. My buddy Dylan has one and he has a very similar workload to you and he loves it.

I'd definitely recommend the Y50, make sure to research the screen swap forums, it's definitely worth the swap, also, I'd go for the 16gb version of it.

Off topic, don't get the non-4k version. The panel is honestly pretty pathetic

Specs: 4790k | Asus Z-97 Pro Wifi | MX100 512GB SSD | NZXT H440 Plastidipped Black | Dark Rock 3 CPU Cooler | MSI 290x Lightning | EVGA 850 G2 | 3x Noctua Industrial NF-F12's

Bought a powermac G5, expect a mod log sometime in 2015

Corsair is overrated, and Anime is ruined by the people who watch it

lenovo y50 1080p model.

is badass. the screen sucks, but you can hook up an external monitor with HDMI, use it as a desktop, then when you need to go just unplug from charger and display, walk off. :D

im not too big on using 4k under 32 inches.... there are lower resolutions that look just as crisp and beautiful under 30 inches, 4k when too small, theres scaling issues, ect.

(proof is that im using a 1080 20'' and perfectly happy. )

Watch out for each other. Love everyone and forgive everyone, including yourself. Forgive your anger, forgive your guilt. Your shame. Your sadness. Embrace and open up your love, your joy, your truth, and most especially your heart.
