i7 4790k + h100i - temps?

Go to solution Solved by Faceman,

Hello, I have recently built a desktop running an i7 4790k cooled by a corsair h100i. While running aida64 I seem to be getting around 90-95 C temp readings from hwmonitor and aida. I have not overclocked it at all and have not swapped out the thermal compound that came with the h100i. While playing games I seem to be getting up to around 70-75 C. I previously had a system with a 4770k that was also cooled by an h100i and never reached these temps with an overclock up to 4 ghz. Is there anyone else with the same setup getting these temps?

Chances are its a mounting problem.  The H100i is notorious for this.

That sounds a bit high did you make sure to clamp the h100i down fully like screws tightened with a screw driver

Yes.

so you didnt add new thermal compound?

i would do that then.

I've read from many places that the thermal compound that comes with the h100i is high quality, I didn't switch it out in my previous build with the 4770k.

I would say your pump is probably failing I had a h100i which lasted 1 month and then I would get crazy temps like 70c idle on 3930k I just threw it out and bought something else

If you used the same h100i for both builds without switching thermal compound then you need new thermal compound.

Seems to be working, although I don't know how relaible corsair link is.

I wasn't having these high temps with the previous build.

I will, however, try a different thermal compound and get back to you guys on this.

Definitely going to try this, I used an asus maximus vii hero this time instead of the formula. Is there a big difference in the thickness of these two motherboards?

No clue, I just see so many problems with the H100i.  Whether it be mounting, pump dying prematurely, loud pump, or Corsair Link problems.  I tell people to avoid it.  The Cooler Master Seidon 240M is the same specs, for only $60 on Newegg.com.  Performs the same, no mounting problems, no pump noise, and no software problems.  Doesn't look as good, but I'll take reliability and functionality over looks for an AIO.

no, not much if any difference in the thickness between any of the ROG boards.

i have the Z87 impact, Hero, Formula, and Extreme and they all have the same

mounting with/without o-ring mod temperatures on the same chip and same OC.

Alright, I'm going to try reapplying thermal compound and remounting with the rings. If none of that works then I will look into getting a different cooler. Thanks for the help everyone.

I am now idling no higher than 30 c and while aida is running no higher than 70 c! It was the mounting problem, when I took the block off I noticed that some of the thermal compound hadn't even touched the cpu. Thank you all very much for the help!
