Just need some TF2 advice.

connorpiper

So I have always played as Pyro, Sniper, Medic and Engineer.

But I have been trying spy lately. I love the idea, but I suck so bad at it. (Like really, really bad)

Any advice for me?

Best Weapons/Loadout?

The only reason i'm asking is because of my monumental level of fail.

I never had the patience to play as the spy for long. The best spies that I've encountered are players with ample patience and overall knowledge of the map. You need to observe everything before making your move. Being a defensive, camping spy is much easier since you'll have teammate help. Maybe try that first.

I'm always a sniper, because I can stay in the base and pick people off :P

Spy is difficult, because you need to wait to uncloak, and usually by then the person has turned around and killed you.

This seems to work for me.

Basically get to or close to the enemy base while cloaked then get somewhere safe (somewhere where you're unlikely to be seen when you uncloak). Wait for enemies to pass you whilst they are heading to the frontline/objective. Target classes that are slow or don't move much (heavies, snipers, engineers etc). When you find a target, disguise as another class, uncloak then approach you target from behind (it will look like your one of them that's just come from their base) and BACKSTAB!!!!

Hope this helps. This will not make you a master Spy, it's just something to start with.

What knife do you usually use? And is the pistol more useful from behind?

OP I would ask my son who I feel is pro at that game to help you but he has been banned for life in my household pretty much from playing that game.  He made my life hell to the point where right now I don't even have him in my home because he behaved so poorly when I told him he could not play TF2. He flooded the bathroom at our old place many times.  He destroyed things.  He assaulted me when I would try to turn the game off on him.  He would sneak and play the game when he wasn't supposed to.  It was a living hell!  He was so addicted to the game it was just sad.  I finally took him to the hospital by police escort after calling the police and yet somehow it got turned around on me that I was doing something wrong and he doesn't live with me now.  Thing is I brought him to the hospital for help and said he may need to be medicated and evaluated for other issues and they said I was dead wrong on asking for this and meanwhile in the time he has been in the care of his step mom he went through a Rebound program that helps youths and he is now on medication and may go on another in the future and he is behaving better.  Go figure you idiots!  He is not playing TF2 anymore which he was totally addicted to.  He also is being medicated for good reason.  Anyway ....

So OP basically I would love to have a great player help you with TF2 but if I let him his next step would probably be him killing me if I didn't let him continue to help you. LOL

Too many ****ing games!  Back log 4 life! :S

I've only ever used the stock knife and the spy-cicle, either one is good. Generally the pistol is more useful from a long distance, or if a Sniper is wearing the Razorback.

Dead Ringer is good if you know the layout of the map and where all the health kits and ammo packs are (DR & Stock InvisiWatch chew up your cloak time, replenished by metal), Cloak & Dagger is good for if you need to do long-stealth trips on metal-lite maps or want to scout out an area without giving away your position (but it burns through cloak as you move, but regenerates it when you're standing still). Enthusiasts Timepiece & Quackendirbt are reskins of Stock InvisiWatch.

Ambassador is good if your trigger reflexes are on-par with a no-scope headshot sniper (since the most damage Ambassador does is on headshots without crit-boosts), otherwise stick to Stock Pistol. the L'tranger is okay if you need to get cloak back quickly using InvisiWatch or Dead ringer, but kinda useless for C&D users. Enforcer is good if you need to deal a bit more damage as an "oh shit!" reflex if you have a failed stab-kill and alerted everyone nearby to you. Diamondback is good for storing crits if you're swift and accurate with your Sappers. Big Kill is a reskinned Stock Pistol

Stock Knife is good for most of the time as you learn the class (Black Rose is a reskin), Kunai is a High Risk-High Reward for lowering your health to 60 (~50% normal of 125) but giving over-heals if you managed to backstab successfully (and is rather broken in TF2 x10 where all stats are multiplied by 10), Your Eternal Reward is good for if you can pull off stab-chains as you will silently kill your victims and take their form as a disguise BUT you can't disguise until your first backstab kill. Wanga Prick is reskinned YER, Big Earner drops your health to 100 but gives you 30% cloak (no matter the watch) when killed with it (backstab or not), Spy-Cicle deals the same damage as Stock Knife but is a fairly-silent killer (like YER) turning victims into ice statues (no kill-feed notice to others but user and victim) and will put the Spy out if they are on fire.

for the Sappers, I only really use the Default. Red Tape Recorder levels-down the buidlings until death, Ap-Sap is just a Wheatley from Portal 2-themed Sapper, and Snack Attack is a reskinned Sapper.

I think that covers the weapons.

Stealth, hold on to your butt and only play payload. They seem to not work out in other modes. Glad to see another TF2 player here!

Patience is a virtue. TBH, I can't really play spy either, but cloak and get up close and personal.

Also, buy a hat.

Beneath this mask there is more than flesh. Beneath this mask there is an idea, Mr. Creedy, and ideas are bulletproof.

As I get older I get angrier more cynical, meaner. I feel some warning posts coming. I feel a ban coming. I was warned.

Imo, it's more about how you play Spy.

If you run into someone you are disguised as or someone who switched to Pyro to find you...you are going to have a bad time.

Anyone who has a sister hates the fact that his sister isn't Kasugano Sora.
Anyone who does not have a sister hates the fact that Kasugano Sora isn't his sister.
I'm not insulting anyone; I'm just being condescending. There is a difference, you see...

I would suggest watching some of StabbyStabby's videos on youtube and study how he moves about the maps.  The setup I use is ambassador, spy-cicle, dead ringer, and stock sapper.  You basically need to stay in the back ground, act as though you are on the other team, on payload, disguise as a friendly pyro and fein your death and then disguise as the other team.  Attack only when there is an easy kill or your DR is fully charged.  You need to use alternate routes on the map to get behind your enemy.  If there is an engineer with a teleport, sap the tele and then stand on it.  When you teleport you will tele-frag the engineer.  When disguising, disguise as pyro, scout(if you're coming from your side), spy, or sniper because they will give you normal move speed.  I would suggest getting a trick stab map in order to practice stair stabs and side stabs.  Find key targets which are usually engineers, medics, and sometimes snipers.  If you can kill a medic, your team will have a huge advantage with uber.  Dropped weapons are also a great way to refill your watch/DR.  You can make an even more convincing death by getting "killed", uncloaking and then getting "killed" again.  If the team is on the offensive and pushing into your team, take some shots with the Ambassador in order to distract the other team.  If the medic is protected by a pyro, the Ambassador is very useful as well.

Hope this helps in some way.  May be hard to understand but this is a lot of what you need to know to be a descent spy.

When it comes to the loadout, I prefer to use all stock except for the dead ringer and ambassador (if my ability to aim permits it).

Most of the strategy I try to use comes from ambushing your targets/going for the medic pick to help out the team

Loadout is your personal taste - just find the set of  weapons that suits your gameplay best. I can tell you what loadout I use and why.

Pyro (my favorite class thb): Degreaser, Scorch Shot and Axtinguisher. Main advantage of this build is the fastest weapon switch, so you can ignite people with Degreaser or Scorch Shot and finish them off with Axtinguisher - it will get 100% crit vs. burning targets. Scorch Shot is also good to do little knockbacks and small aoe fire damage. Keep in midn, that Degreaser has a small damage penalty.

Sniper: I use this class really occasionally, so I won't give you good advice on this one - except of this one: don't use Machina, unless you want to be called a noob for using such overpowered weapon :)

Medic: Blutsauger, Medigun/Kritzieg, Vita-Saw. Primary weapon for survival - every hit heals you. Medigun if you need to heal people and make them invincible for a short period of time. You should choose to Kritzieg if you feel that enemies are too strong and you have to finish them of quickly with 100% crits :) Vita-Saw is a nice addition for building your ubercharge fast - you keep up to 20% of the charge upon death.

Engineer: Depends on your gamestyle - if you want to be more a defensive, stationary Engie or an offensive (or as I like to call it, combat Engie). For defensive, go with Rescue Ranger (if you are far away and you see your buildings are about to be destroyed, you can save them with this gun), Wrangler (manual sentry gun control) OR Short Circuit (uses your metal, but you can destroy rockets, grenades, arrows and pyro's flares), Southern Hospitality (bleed on hit, good for spotting Spies trying to sap your stuff). For combat Engie, go with: Frontier Justice (crits from every enemy killed with your sentry, you get those crits from destroyed sentry), Pistol (just regular one, weapon with more range than Frontier Justice), Gunslinger (core of this build: more HP, mini sentry which cannot be upgradable or repairable, but uses only 100 metal instead of 130 and it builds faster).

I hope that helped a little. If you have any further questions, look for me at Steam. Same nick as here :)

I was asking for solely spy.

Do you play spy?
