My thoughts on The Evil Within

Skcorpion86

I don't know how many of you have played The Evil Within, but for those who hasn't played it yet I can honestly say it disappointed me and was a pretty mediocre e game. My full review can be seen here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hb0XomhtxPg&feature=youtu.be

For those who have played it... what do you think about it? Are you or are you not enjoying it?

Not sure how this could have disappointed you. I think that it was fairly obvious, with all the bullshit in the run-up, that it was going to be another "AAA" title. Dumbed down, console-centered, and appealing to the lowest common denominator. That means it can't be too difficult or too scary.

The PC port should not have happened. It's a disgrace, it should be highly critized by the media. But alas, we know it won't be. And people will continue to accept gradually worse products.

And oh yeah, pretty OK video.

The game is great. I wish people would stop whining about the shitty port, we get it. You don't need to keep repeating yourself over and over and over again. How about actually discuss the game itself rather than "MUH GRAPHICS". And besides, every issue can be fixed, I have the game running at 50-60 fps, no black bars, a decent FOV, at 1920x1200, and it looks great. If you can actually be bothered to put five minutes of effort in, there won't be any problems.

As for the game itself, it's basically Resident Evil 4 but infinitely better in my opinion. It's RE4 with the old-school Resident Evil vibe, with a little Silent Hill mixed in.

No not really, some people actually have a spine and refuse to accept lowering our standards due to the limitations of console systems. If you want to be the gullible, tasteless consumer being portrayed in the "EA in a nutshell" video that's your choice. But don't expect, or even force me to respect your decision or accept these terrible products.

As far as gameplay or "actual game" goes, it's not that great either as far as i can tell from the let's play video's and reviews (yes, i go for the obscure reviews). Videogames shouldn't have to be defended like this, let's just call a dud when it's appropriate without getting all touchy-feely ok?

Who said I accepted anything? Who even said I bought the game?

There's a lot more to discuss in video games than numbers, specifically, you know, gameplay.

If you haven't bought it, you're basically openly admitting you're pirating the game here;

" I have the game running at 50-60 fps, no black bars, a decent FOV, at 1920x1200, and it looks great. "

And you're basically saying we should get over ourselves, here;

"How about actually discuss the game itself rather than "MUH GRAPHICS". And besides, every issue can be fixed, .... If you can actually be bothered to put five minutes of effort in, there won't be any problems. "

I agree a game should not be judged solely on it's graphics. But the elephant in the room is just too noisy and it's pooping all over the floor.

Yeah pretty much.

Anyway, back to discussing the game.

Which is wrong on a whole set of levels. Also, don't try to guide the topic because it isn't your topic. He asked for opinions, i'm giving mine.

And to be frank, you implying the game is OK-ish just because you pirated it and invested nothing, does not mean it's OK to be selling this game at 60E (that's not even including the season pass) a pop to PC gamers. For what it is, it's a rushed (or deliberate) half-assed port. Which could've been somewhat forgiven if it was like Dark Souls and ATLEAST a damn good game and merely given to the community under the same circumstances (they hadn't oringally intended to port it). But it's not, is it. It's mediocre, run of the mill. It's not really excelling at anything other than hyping itself way harder than it deserves credit for. The graphics look mundane for 2011, the gameplay looks fairly lineair, clunky controls, absolutely terrible FOV and camera controls and a framerate/frametimes that actually affects gameplay rather than just being a stat.

Looking at this video, I really doubt your 50-60fps constant comment. It goes all over the place and is even visible on youtubes locked 30fps.

Just how far are you going to exalt this?

Good thing I never asked for your approval then, isn't it?

Are you trolling, or do you have severely limited arguing skills? That really makes no sense at all.

If I appear cynical that's because there is allot to complain about, and the laissez-faire attitude towards these companies is one of them. You're welcome to prove me wrong, but not with memes, gifs or sneering.

I agree with your review. It's a "by the numbers" and mainstream game that will appeal to a lot of people but does absolutely nothing new or special. The poor graphical performance is also a noticeable technical blow to a game that is artistically above average at best.

Some of the silly design choices that make little sense and ruin immersion:

- Level clear! checkpoints and screens. We all need to be reminded that we're playing an episodic video game. Is this 1995?

- Destroying barrels and crates for items. Is this Super Mario World or 1995 again? Why not just scatter items realistically around the world? Why show a graphic of a dozen bullets but then provide a single ammo round when I pick it up? They could solve this stupid design choice by simply giving at least 4-5 rounds of ammo per drop but have fewer drop locations. Problem solved!

- Checkpoints, lots of checkpoint saves. In a survival horror game? Really?! I can accept them in Dead Space 3 because that is more of an action horror game than survival, but frequent checkpoints do not belong in pure survival horror.

The creator is clearly stuck in the previous decade. This is a Resident Evil 4 rehash that is many years too late.

Alien Isolation is far better game.

Console gamers are even easier to lure in that way.

IGN USA loves this game, no surprises. Braindead reviewers are easy to please.

Most gamesmedia are no longer objective or unbiased. I think we have to accept the fact that they no longer have a function in gaming (or at the very least gradually diminishing one) as reviewers, which is dangerous because we have to rely on youtubers for our impressions and they're not free of influence either.

The game is just Resident Evil 4 with stealth. Whoever really liked RE4 will probably love this game, because I didn't. I would have arsed myself to try and like it if it was a Good PC port but alas Japanese developers just don't care.

It feels as if the whole "sneak away from the monster" survival horror genre has moved from indie to AAA. Not really enjoying it. I want more horror games like FEAR, not Amnesia.

Why accept a fact that most people have already accepted and especially when they have lost most of their influence?

As for Youtubers, it's hard to assert blanket statements like that over them solely because they don't have a centralized modus operandi as games media. In this situation, the only real answer is to find people you can trust. Something that can't be answered by a concept, as it requires research and verification.
