UK Anime Fan Convicted for Having "Illegal Pictures of Imaginary Children"

TL;DR

Man sits in jail for 2 years for having porographic images of anime children on his computer. He sat 2 years in prison before he got the sentence, which ended up being 9 months (so he sat in prison 15 months longer than he actually should have).

 

 

Some extracts from the article:

His barrister Richard Bennett said: “These are not what would be termed as paedophilic images. These are cartoons.”

And Mr Bennett revealed that such banned images were freely available on legitimate sites.

He said: “This case should serve as a warning to every Manga and Anime fan to be careful. It seems there are many thousands of people in this country, if they are less then careful, who may find themselves in that position too.”

 

Police found the images when they seized Hoque’s computer from his home on June 13, 2012, said prosecutor Harry Hadfield. He said officers found 288 still and 99 moving images, but none were of real people.

 

They were classified as prohibited images as they depicted young girls, some in school uniforms, some exposing themselves or taking part in sexual activity.

Six years ago he was prosecuted for having “Tomb Raider-style” computer-generated pictures of fictional children.

They were so realistic, a jury convicted him on six counts of making “indecent pseudo-photographs” of children, which he had denied.

That too was the first case of its kind in the country. A judge told him he “crossed the line as to what is illegal” and those pictures could be “a door into a very murky and distasteful world”.

It is important to emphasise that there were no actual children or perpetrators involved

 

 

Does anyone else notice a strong parallel to the "violent video games make people murderers!" argument? Because I sure do.

I find the images meant to be photo realistic distasteful but this covers all other art styles as well. I have the same stance on this as I have on violent video games, virtual characters do not need the same protection as real life people.

It was legal until 2010 and then it became illegal. I doubt the UK will change its mind on it but I think it would be good if they did. I am strictly against victimless and/or thought crimes and this is one of those.

 

Oh and he got sentenced to 9 months in prison. Sadly for him, he say in prison for 2 years while waiting for the trial. So yeah... He spent 1 and 3 months in prison more than he was sentenced to. As far as I know you don't get any compensation for those kinds of fuck ups.

 

I just hope Sweden sticks to being sane. In a fairly recent course case in Sweden regarding the same thing the accused person was set free. A high ranked police commented on the case afterward saying "we can finally go back to fighting real criminals" or something along those lines.

Which is good, because I would go crazy if I couldn't read all this super interesting manga.

While I don't particualy like these kinds of images (to be honest they kinda creep me out), I don't have a problem with them.

Whatever floats your goat, man.

 

I can see that the police/law enforcement is worried that these kinds of images will lead to actual children bening sexually assulted, but I have yet to see a study that proves this.

And to link it with actual CP is just insulting. Those were real children being abused, not a cartoon.

UK has a stigma with paedophilia because of a recent spat of high profile celebrity senior citizens being convicted of long strings of abusing minors several decades ago until present. Paedophilia is also a very low tolerance crime in UK.

 

I dislike people creating sexual cartoons of children, it is obvious that they think of children sexually and it should be illegal in my opinion.

No this is specifically characters suppose to be underage.

The article does mention "exposing themselves" which is kind of vague. That could include lots of ecchi manga/anime that isn't even hentai. For example To LOVE-Ru which the image I posted is from.

That isn't an opinion though, that's just out right false. The images do not do anything for me, but should cartoons or drawings be illegal? Of course not, that's fucking stupid.
