Help for picking a laptop

Okay so I am looking at getting a laptop for Uni, I will be doing computer sciences and taking a heavy focus on Maths, Java and Networking, with stuff like algorithms and python, so I was looking at a rMBP (Base £999 model) and was wondering is this a good thing to purchase? or should I get something else? I have a desktop for heavy stuff such as VMs but I want the laptop for only Uni work, such as programming and videos, and I shall be using a Network drive for mass storage.

Is this something I should get for Uni, or should I look at something else.

Thanks!

Sorry I did not clearly state about what I want, I simply forgot lol, anyways I need a bit of portability, from time to time I will be required to go down to Milton Keynes so po rtability, battery life of over 6 hours is a must, the desktop is a gaming PC by build nature, but it has kind of managed to evolve into something that can do VMs etc, so yeah sum things up,  I want great battery life so I can use it away from the desk easily, nice portability, the Air would be nice, but because I am getting it on finance, and my budget for this is £1000, I thought the rMBP would be a much finer choice, and as I will be doing mostly course work over anything, so it will kind of be a laptop to replace my desktop.

I already do have a laptop, but it does not have as much power as a rMBP, (Its a AMD a4 5000 1.4Ghz Quad, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD) which is why I am getting a mac, or maybe anyways

I would like a Macbook Air, but I cant see the price as even the 11" with 8GB RAM is nothing compared to rMBP, I believe the most demanding task I shall be doing is Java and Video streaming (From uni)

Since you already have a desktop, I would say go to newegg and find a mid range i3 laptop. Be like 5-6 hundred bucks. Throw in an SSD so it lowers boot time and call it day. I am in same situation and the laptop I'm looking at is 400 bucks but I have a desktop always ready and a server running constant to. Yes my uni lets me run a private server on campus using campus Internet. Be jelly

XMG or Schenker has some really good laptops. the laptops are produced in germany and you can costumize the hole laptop. I dont know where are you from, but when you are from europe -> mysn.de (germany) | mysn.co.uk (UK) | mysn.eu (EU)

these laptops are pretty light and have and enormous performance for the price:

  • XMG C504 ( 15.6" IPS Display)
  • XMG P505
  • Schenker S403 (with touchscreen!)
  • Schenker B513 (IPS Display)
  • Schenker M504 (IPS Display)
  • Schenker D503 (you can buy a dockingstation for that)

greets from swizterland :D

I would fully agree. I have a macbook air and I love it. Apple does a great job with their laptops in my opinion because everything works great. Great battery life, great trackpad, and great performance. I am able to run windows through VMware just fine on my air as well.
