Ubisoft GDC Presentation of PS4 & X1 GPU & CPU Performance

thewhitestig
Well, that was quite an interesting article.

And here's the video version of the article.

And here is the Ubisoft document itself.

So what we have learned here is that the Xbox One and PS4 are more powerful then the 360 and PS3. Wow that is some mind blowing information.

It's quite more to it than that. There's a humongous amount of information in that presentation at the bottom of the post. I posted that particular picture at the top cause it's a highlight and catches attention.

This is really interesting it shows that the Ps4 CPU is slower than the XboxOne CPU which makes sense due to GDRR5 latency.
But what's really impressive is the Cell processor it's faster than the Ps4 CPU even though it's 8 years old :o
They should throw a 980 in the comparison just for the LOLs console gamers would cry if they see the 5Tflops xD

There actually few things here. The X1 CPU is faster because its actually clocked a bit higher. Not long before the release, the system got a slight clock increase which did put the X1 CPU slightly above. The performance hit isn't coming from GDDR5 latency, as there isn't much varience between DDR3 or GDDR5

And with the PS4 and Cell comparison yeah these sorts of functions the Cell really excels at for such an old design. This is a very specific example though, but also exactly how Sony wanted the PS4 to be used. Off load as much compute

work to the GPU that can be and leave the CPU to do things x86 CPUs still do better.

Would have been nice if an i7 was chucked into the graphs so we had a good comparison across previous/current gen consoles an PC. Also that 980 would be good to :P We could see what kind of performance hits there are with PC based systems and how much power they have compared to the consoles.

So this parity problem wouldn't exist (excusing devs for a sec) if they used more powerful CPU's in the consoles right? <--effectively stopping issues with CPU time allowance, Physics, Shadow simulations and CPU power availability.?

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

The PS3, when it launched was stupidly over powered and developers had no idea how to take advantage of the custom cell processors that the PS3 was running  <_<

But that was a good thing because that's what a console needs.

It has to be overpowered because it has to run games for around 7 years.

Now we have this garbage gen that is already on its limits already and is getting out performed about 4x by PC's on release.

The comparison with latency is not really right because he is using a PC which is very different from the consoles.

Not only does DX11 mess the hole result up because it really cripples CPU draw calls but also the fact that they used an extreme edition cpu.

I bet if you would do the same thing with Mantle and pair a low end CPU to a high end GPU the result would be completely different.

If GDRR5 would be better we would use it on PC instead of DRR3/DRR4.

Suppose I should have been more clear, wasn't really looking at the benchmarks but the actual numbers that are given for CAS ratings of the different ram types...

Under the graphs there is information on the chip speeds independent of and kind of system overheads that you talked about. Going by all the numbers the latency varies between 10-12ns for both DDR3 and GDDR5. Seeing as the consoles have might lighter working environments, the exact numbers of the chips them selves are a better indication of performance.

On why GDDR ram isn't used for system RAM, probably worth another thread to investigate that topic :P

So Ps4 has double the power? Why is it not running games at 900p 60fps then?

i find it funny that both sony and xbox but underpowered cpus in. as the cpu calculates what can probably be the most important stuff for gameplay, physics, ai etc. no game ever goes down as one of the all time greats or system seller because of graphics alone.

eg halo CE, it wasn't graphics that sold it it was gameplay,

Too bad the graphs didn't include a 5Tflops desktop GPU. Console peasants might finally realise how lacking they are

Numbers on a graph do not translate to amazing things going down in real time.

No that would be terrible..

This way code is more easily portable between PS4, Xbox One and PC. Making life difficult for devs is not good.
