Hosting a private VPN... help?

Hey guys i am looking to host a private VPN on my home machine, so that my girlfriend can get around her colleges monitoring and blocking of many sites and services(Skype being one of them).

I have tried just buying her a VPN (P.I.A.) but for some reason it wont connect.

Later i came across this Reddit thread witch mentioned it might have to do something with "Layer 7 filtering" and that "You are going to need to use cloaked ports". So i taught why not just host a VPN on my machine then?

After a couple of hours of googling i got stuck. If some one has experience with this, or knows of a good guide i would much appreciate it.

 

Both of us run windows, but i could run linux if it helps/makes it easier.

 

Oh and she has this app on her iPad, called Onavo Protect (a VPN app, btw i was surprised that crapple had VPN apps that worked) and it worked until recently if that is of any help.

Her college is blocking known VPN ports, the only way you can get around this is to change the port number that your VPN uses of this is possible. Also just a heads up if your other half is caught purposely avoiding filters and blocks her college can terminate her studies.

You could try with something as simple as Hamachi. Host it on your machine and configure internet sharing to share your internet over the connection. Might work.

Have you tried teamviewer conference call ? She could also use teamviewer to connect though a pc home, controls it and then start browsing sites that they block. Not sure if it's against the rules but it's not the pc of the college that is browsing but her pc home...

You could use the RDP port for VPN. In a sense they wouldn't know the difference.

Hamachi is a l2l vpn. All the internet traffic still goes out regular internet connection. If you want you could build a pptp vpn. Dont recommend though because all the traffic gets forwarded to your place then out to the internet. Maybe just use something like ultrasurf should work great.

Thanks for all the feedback, i have tried hamachi and teamviewer, but none of them work sadly. Ultasurf seems to sort of work, so that's something thanks again guys

You could attempt to use something called SoftEther - you need to unblock the port being used on the host machine ( but you can change the port to whatever you like )

IN PIA setting set the protocol to UDP and the Port to 53. This should bypass the filters as it does at my college.

EDIT: or do TCP and Port 443
